Windows has detected an IP address conflict

I just recently purchased my laptop so I am just learning. The message I got on the computer said, Another computer on this network has the same IP address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are available in the Windows System event log. What does this mean and is this something important I need to fix. I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I see that message on my home network sometimes, and it's not critical.  If you have a home network, try powering off your router, waiting a few seconds, and powering it on.  If you're on a business network, consult with the network manager.

    i have been having this problem also and i have a hacker, so you may want to make sure all your malware software is working correctly because they can disable anti virus and malware software. i have been thru 5 anti virus and the hacker dismembered all of them. this may not be your problem but malware is very well hidden and if you see something strange always check it out. i found out the hard way but now i know what to look for. problem is i cant find anyone that can get it out of my system.

    once again may not be the problem but thought i would add this to the replies.

    if you want anymore info let me know, i have taught myself how to deal with the hacker just cant get rid of him and yes its a him. Got his IP address and found him...in CHINA!

    Sometimes I have that same problem, when I do a ipconfig /release then renew it fetches the same address back with (Preferred) next to it, whe n when you pull out Ethernet cable or disable wireless card, wait a few minutes and enable the card or plug it in. this will force it to grab a new ip address

    I've been having the same problem for months - but ONLY at my home network...have tried everything suggested but all seems hopeless :(

    I got the same annoying message after I updated the firmware on my Verizon modem. Tried your cure and it worked like a charm.
