I have Windows 7 Ultimate. Since very recently an unknown device keeps popping up in the device manager every time I start Win. It's reported location is within the front USB root hub but I haven't changed there anything lately. The device status reports "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43)". I can uninstall/disable it but it will get picked up again the next time I reboot. All other usb devices (mouse, keyboard, web camera, APC UPS, external drive, printer) work fine. How do I get rid of this nuisance so that it doesn't reappear?

If the problem coincided with hooking up the APC UPS that may indicate the problem is with the UPS.

Somewhat similar situation discussed in the following link:

Your situations seems similar as from the "System Information" file the "problem device" has an Error Code "This device is working properly" yet remains an "Unknown Device".

I would suggest to detach the APC UPS from the computer and uninstall any related software.

Restart the computer and see if the "Unknown Device" problem resolves.

    Belkin 2 solved problem. Glad for you though don't understand why a hub connection would do for you what straight front-of-tower would not..........???????

    I have Win 7 Home Premium. Bought new external drive Hard Disk) Targa make.

    I plugged in to front of tower USB. Driver automatically installed ok and Desktop ikon appeared.

    When attempted to Open using Desktop icon, was told device not recognised. Tried again and it worked. Was successful in writing one test file to it. Opened that file. Fine.

    Next time, 'not recognised' all the time and in Devices and Printers, all my other devices appeared and are working fine.The new device also appeared but way below the others and labelled Unknown Device.

    I troubleshooted and was told 'Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43). In the troubleshooting report it says 'There are problems with some PnP devices' - whatever that means. 

    I tried shutdown and reboot. No change.

    I connected device to wife's laptop and it worked perfectly, so the answer has to be with Windows.

    I would be more than obliged if some kind person out there would poiunt the way to a solution.
