I have solved the problem of high cpu useage by trustedinstaller on one old Vista computer.
All other suggestions I see in different fourms involve turning off Windows Update or other bad solutions.
Symptoms
- Trusted Installer uses high cpu. On normal computers high cpu usage will last for a few minutes and then go down to around 0%. On this computer cpu usage was stuck at 49% (which means 98% of one of the two cores).
Before you begin:
Please make sure that you have no interferring programs (registry cleaners, malware, etc)
Please make sure to run chkdsk /r so that your disk is error free.
Solution
- Click Start and enter services.msc in the search box at the bottom to start the Service Explorer.
- In Service Explorer, find Windows Modules Installer (Tusted Installer = Windows Modules Installer). Stop it. Then Disable it.
- Restart you computer and go back to Service Explorer.
- In Service Explorer, find Windows Update and stop it
- Open a File Explorer window and go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download.
Delete everything inside the Download folder
- In Service Explorer start the Windows Update service again
- In Service Explorer, find Windows Modules Installer. Make sure it's set to startup Automatically.
- Wait an hour or so. Trusted Installer may want to try to finish what it was doing when it was stuck, but now it may actually finish it.
- Start Windows Update again and ask it to do a new search for updates.
Hope this works for you too!
