How do I know what the CIFS sign is

Greetings! I just bought one of those networkable blu ray players... I have access to my portable network drive and thus are able to watch downloaded movies... Could you define  how to log in to my  network ... the bluray player asks for a "cifs sign in" in order to stream from my laptop... In lamen terms... I dont know what would the CIFS siign in name would be... How do I know what it is? I cant figure out what or where it will be...

Common Internet File System (CIFS), a protocol that defines a standard for remote file access using millions of computers at a time. With CIFS, users with different platforms and computers can share files without having to install new software.

I would suggest you to contact the manufacturer of the device for CIFS sign in details, also look for the CIFS information from the user manual.

    It looks like the CIFS Login problem is indeed an issue with Vista and Win7 security settings. The Windows Professional and Ultimate versions can be fixed by changing security policy settings through secpol.msc. The Windows Home versions require editing the registry directly (because they do not have secpol.msc).

    For Win7 Professional and Ultimate go to http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=18886334 and read post #1466. For Win7 Home versions, go to post #1693 and on for multiple options.

    I went back to work trying to solve the CIFS login problem. Despite making the registry edit mentioned at the AVS Forum link above, I still couldn't get through the CIFS login screen. The problem ended up being--you're not going to believe this--the Windows Live Sign-In Assistant installed during a Windows update. Go to http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1229543&page=65 and look at post 1939. After uninstalling it (and turning off password protected sharing in the Network and Sharing Center), the BD570 opens shared folders on my win7 x64 Home Premium computer without any CIFS login prompt. No passwords set, no extra login accounts in Win7, nada. The shared folders open under Win7 the same way the did under Vista and WinXP.

    Hey, it worked for me.  My wife's notebook was showing up in the list of servers but I couldn't get the right "CIFS Sign In" information (ID and Password) to allow access on my new LG590.  So first I went into her computer and did a windows explore (right click on start and then click explore) right click on the C drive and click on properties.  Then, click on the "Sharing" tab and click Add and Apply.  Close everything then set up a user's account.  I used Barbara (my wife's name) for the user and "Password" for the password.  then I checked the computer name (click Start, right click My Computer, properties, and then the Computer Name tab.  The computer name will be listed.  This is what should appear in your list of servers on the LG.  Go back to the LG click the server name and follow what IcabodCrane suggested above. PS, I may have used a forward slash / instead of a backslash .

    Now, I have another problem.  We have 3 computers in the house (2 notebooks and a desktop PC) and a Home Server.  The Home Server, the desktop, and 1 notebook all showed up on the list of servers but one notebook is not showing up and I have no idea why.  Any ideas?

    On my network (since I have multiple servers) I need to prefix the user name with the server (or domain)

    My main video NAS device is called 'titan', so when I connect to it from the BD570 player I login as:

    titan\video_user

      I just bought the lg 590 and can't figure out the cifs sign in either...have you had any luck ? any help would be much appreciated.
