Fallout 3 Windows 7 crash on startup, tried patch, xlive.dll fix, ffdshow does nothing

My laptop should be a sufficient enough system to run Fallout 3.

Windows 7

core i3

4gb ram 32/64x

cocoa 2 smartaudio

intel graphics hd

I downloaded the patch from the Fallout website, then got the xlive.dll error, downloaded the patch to fix that, continued to crash on startup, searched for ffdshow couldn't find it, when I found it in the registry enabling or disabling it has nothing to do with gameplay or fallout port, also read elsewhere that it's another fix that doesn't work - especially for windows 7 users.  Tried running in Vista and XP, I'm set to run everything as admin., none of this ____ works.  I bought this game retail, since when does a game not work?  AND when I paid full price for it?  This is ____ stupid.  Is it the graphics card - I don't think so?  Please help, I don't play much games, was really looking forward to trying this one out.  But I guess things just aren't made the way they used to...to work.

Hi litleredpoetess

I would suggest you to check with the manufacturer regarding Windows 7 compatibility.

You may even check for the compatibility from the below link: Windows compatibility center: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx

Try installing the setup file in Windows Vista or XP compatibility mode. Steps to follow:

i.        Right Click on the game (On .exe file)

ii.      Click on Properties

iii.    Click on Compatibility tab

iv.     Select Run this program in compatibility mode and select windows vista

Below link for more reference: Make older programs run in this version of Windows: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Make-older-programs-run-in-this-version-of-Windows

If the program or software is not compatible with windows 7 and if you are not able to run the software in compatibility mode then you need to contact the manufacturer of the software or program, for there are any update or patch for Windows 7.

Thanks and Regards:

    Hello

I am affraid that as far as this particular game goes, it doesn't work very often on the Windows 7 operating system. I spent quite a while looking for patches and cracks to try and make it load beyond the main menu screen. In simple terms fallout 3 came out before windows 7 did and therefore wasn't designed to support it.

It does however work on some machines but for some reason that i dont know it seems to just be pot luck, if it isn't working on yours then welcome to the majority.

You may well be frustrated by the FO3 "experience", but starting a new thread

would be a better idea than resurrecting this old one.

This thread has a lot of hijackers (others asking a question, or presenting with different system specs, etc) that detract from the fact that the OP is using a laptop with Intel HD graphics which are not really suitable for this game. Without knowing which version of Intel HD graphics it's difficult to say just how unsuitable, but all low settings is a good bet. In all the muddle there are some who said the suggestions got the game running for them.

Should you do decide to start your own thread describe exactly what is, or is not happening. Also include any error messages, and your system specifications.

You are obviously correct.  FO3 is not working on your machine, but it certainly does on my and many thousands more Win7 64bit machines.

The problem is not Win7 compatibility. The problem is the game is prone to

instability. Like all games from Bethesda it does suffer from random crashes,

lots of crashes some times, but the game is compatible and will run on Win7 64bit.

The most important fixes for me were the Quad core fix and the ffdshow fix.

Why having to pop a d3d9.dll into the games directory is suppoed to help I don't

know, as I've never done so, but different systems get different results I guess.

I also installed using compatibility for Vista sp1 as a precaution, but don't really know if it benefits anything.

I also had a situation after about 150 hrs of game-play on my second play through

where the game did well and truly start stuffing up, including flashing grass textures, and crashes every few minutes, but reinstalling the game solved that,

and I was able to keep on with the old saves, but had to start a new game first and then copy the old saves into the new game save location (a GFWL  thing).

I think this problem started when I enabled  'ambient occlusion' in Nvidia Control Panel. Possibly compounded by trying to run Anti-aliasing, which the game doesn't really need anyway.

Due to prior bad experience with GFWL, I also do not launch the game while on line. I avoid GFWL whenever possible regardless of which game, but if I remember

correctly I did let GFWL do it's thing just after installing. Trying to deny GFWL

it's 'update' opportunity (Steam too) can cause problems.

btw - Fallout New Vegas is more stable than FO3, Oblivion or Morrowind.

I have done the d3d9 fix. I did the .ini fix. I did every freakin fix on the internet and it still does NOT run. All of these fixes are **** and a waste of time. DO NOT waste your time. Fallout 3 WILL NOT work on Windows 7. Period.
