i had to format my pc yesterday and i can not access my pics on my 2ndry hardrive can anyone help this is the message i get when i try to view them

I recently started have the SAME problem. Windows Photo Viewer had been working swimmingly over the last few months on the same exact images without any problems.

I suspect Microsoft updated some code somewhere that got pushed out as an update -- that's now causing the problem.

As a diagnostic, I tried right-click "Open with..." and chose Paint. The same file opened without any problems.

Thumbnails are all being generated for ALL images without problem.

Yet Windows Photo Viewer cannot view ANY of my image files. Paint has no problems.

Similarly, right-click "Open with..." and chosing Microsoft Office 2010. Image loads with no problems.

If the original poster has the same success using other programs -- then the problem is with Windows Photo Viewer -- Microsoft's not having it recognize the code permissions or something.

This is on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Most recent updates from Microsoft applied.

    Hi Debbie...I know this was a while back when you responded..but your response got me started...however, it's set up so I have to do each folder...photo.  I just went from Picasa to Microsoft Windows Viewer, and now it's saying it won't let me in to the other folders because I don't have administrative rights, or something like that.  Is there a way to do the whole thing and not every picture?  That's a lot of pictures:-0

    Also, I'm trying to figure out how to have a thumbnail view of the photo so I don't have to open it before I know what it is...they're all in MWV...can you help me change that also?

    Go back a few replies and find the answers from Joe and Ski,both ANGELS WHO SHOULD BE HIRED BY MICROSOFT BECAUSE THEY ARE ABOUT CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SOLUTION ORIENTED UNLIKE SOME OF YOUR ENGINEERS......wow, that felt good.

    Honestly i think i have a different issue here with everyone else...

    I had all my files and folders saved on a work PC. I was leaving that company so i transferred everything onto my Terrabyte... For some unknown reason i put a protection password on the folders....

    When i got home i couldn't access any of the folders...

    I have now got round access to the folders BUT i cannot open ANY of the pictures...

    I am in utter panic because all the pictures are of my baby boy...

    Can anyone help... I have tried EVERYTHING above even from Ski382 and NOTHING!!!!

    Still my pictures won't open and just the statement of ''windows photo viewercan't open this picture because you don't have the correct permissions to access the file location...''

    PLEASE HELP!!

    Hello Whittylad,

    I would suggest attempting to take the ownership of the folder and then use the steps to grant permission to all users:

    a.     Locate the file or folder on which you want to take ownership in windows explorer

    b.     Right click on file or folder and select “Properties” from Context Menu

    c.     Click on Security tab

    d.     Click on “Advance”

    e.     Now click on Owner tab in Advance Security Settings for User windows

    f.      Click on Edit Button and select user from given Change Owner to list if user or group is not in given list then, click on other users or groups. Enter name of user/group and click ok. You can even click on administrator here, if you are logged in as an administrator.

    g.     Now select User/group and click apply and ok. (Check “Replace owner on sub containers and objects” if you have files and folder within selected folder)

    h.     Click ok when Windows Security Prompt is displayed

    i.      Now Owner name must have changed

    j.      Now click Ok to exist from Properties windows

    k.     Once you have taken the ownership of file or folder

    Grant Permissions to everyone (or your user account) -

    a. Go to C: and then click right click on folder and choose propertiesb. Then go to security tab and click Edit then click Add => Advancedc. If you click on advanced now click on Find Now and choose everyone and click Okd.****Then again click Okand now click on Allow => Full control => Ok
