i had to format my pc yesterday and i can not access my pics on my 2ndry hardrive can anyone help this is the message i get when i try to view them

I recently started have the SAME problem. Windows Photo Viewer had been working swimmingly over the last few months on the same exact images without any problems.

I suspect Microsoft updated some code somewhere that got pushed out as an update -- that's now causing the problem.

As a diagnostic, I tried right-click "Open with..." and chose Paint. The same file opened without any problems.

Thumbnails are all being generated for ALL images without problem.

Yet Windows Photo Viewer cannot view ANY of my image files. Paint has no problems.

Similarly, right-click "Open with..." and chosing Microsoft Office 2010. Image loads with no problems.

If the original poster has the same success using other programs -- then the problem is with Windows Photo Viewer -- Microsoft's not having it recognize the code permissions or something.

This is on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Most recent updates from Microsoft applied.

    Hi!   I tried to follow the steps to fix on my issue here as I cant open my pictures anymore on my Drive D :(    Please help...  I have Windows 7 ultimate.. after I reinstall the OS all pictures will not open as it shows "Photo Gallery can't open this photo because you do not have permission  to access the file location "

Im talking about the part  " Click Windows Key and E / Click on the Secondary drive / Right click on a folder and select Share - add or verify that your user account is listed and as owner if not set your user account up as owner with full control."

    I had the same problem with Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit where some photos in a folder where not accessible by any means and other photos were working fine. Here is a possible solution that worked for me:

    1. Right Click on Photo
    2. Click Properties
    3. Open The Security Tab
    4. Click Edit
    5. Remove any "Unknown" Users ...
    6. Remove your user name too ...
    7. Add Your User Name by clicking "ADD", in the object names, simply enter your windows user name and hit ok.

    It should work now !
