i had to format my pc yesterday and i can not access my pics on my 2ndry hardrive can anyone help this is the message i get when i try to view them

I recently started have the SAME problem. Windows Photo Viewer had been working swimmingly over the last few months on the same exact images without any problems.

I suspect Microsoft updated some code somewhere that got pushed out as an update -- that's now causing the problem.

As a diagnostic, I tried right-click "Open with..." and chose Paint. The same file opened without any problems.

Thumbnails are all being generated for ALL images without problem.

Yet Windows Photo Viewer cannot view ANY of my image files. Paint has no problems.

Similarly, right-click "Open with..." and chosing Microsoft Office 2010. Image loads with no problems.

If the original poster has the same success using other programs -- then the problem is with Windows Photo Viewer -- Microsoft's not having it recognize the code permissions or something.

This is on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Most recent updates from Microsoft applied.

    I am having the same problem as the folks above, except none of the solutions seem to work. 

    This is also an external HD, and the problem appears to be limited to the jpegs.  When I right-click on the individual pictures -> Share it says "Nobody" and there is a graphic of a locked lock.  When I go into properties and say "share with everyone", it goes through a period where it looks like it's processing, and then it says "Your file could not be shared".  Even if I go one photo at a time and select "Share" with any of the other users, or try to add other users, it doesn't work.

    I cannot paste these onto the desktop - or anywhere else.  When I paste it says "You require permission from Candice-PC\Candice to make changes to this file" - even though that is the user I am logged on as.  Opening it with other software also does not work, as I continue to have permissions errors.

    Help!  Thank you.

    This is frustrating. I just reinstalled Windows 7 Professional 64 to a new HDD. The files on my 5 other drives keep giving me the above. I've read all the comments above and still have problems. Your customers should not have to pull their hair out for something you did. Fix it. (I am the only one using this machine. Just tell me how to disable all security on this as your security setting for a home user is absurd!

    I have had luck with these steps:

    right click go to properties

    click on the security tab

    click continue (with vista i have to click continue again for permission)

    click on add....

    under slect users or groups click advanced....

    under select users or groups on the right side is find now, click that

    then scroll down to everyone click that. then click okay

    under the select users or groups click okay again.

    on permission for everyone check full control and then click apply, then okay

    then click okay

    I was having this same problem with some pictures of my own. I checked my users who had permission to access the files, and the user I was on didn't have them, so I added them.
