Taskbar does not Auto-hide all the time Windows 7

**Original Title**Windows 7 taskbar won't consistantly autohide. After changing the properties to Autohide and clicking 'OK', it hides for a brief second then reappears. Other times it autohides as desired.

My taskbar autohide behaves in an erratic pattern. When I have an alert, it autohides after resolving the alert, but other times it refuses to go away, even if I, once again, open the properties, uncheck autohide, recheck autohide, then click 'apply' and/or 'OK'. As I type this, the taskbar stubbornly remains!

In the "good old days" applicaitons would often un-hide the Taskbar so their notification icons could show an updated status and they could ensure it would be seen. I think this method has fallen out of favor, but older applications that haven't been updated could still be sending the commands to the system to show the Taskbar. Is it possible that you have an older app in the notification area that's affecting the Taskbar as described?

What notification area icons do you have (and what versions)?

For what it's worth, I just tried disabling Avast Pro 5.0 and it still allowed the Taskbar to auto-hide.

Hi Lamargene,

Welcome to Microsoft Answers.

See that “Lock the Taskbar” is not enabled. If it is, you may disable it by right-clicking on taskbar and unchecking it.

Still the same behavior?

If such is the case, I’d recommend you to download Microsoft Security Essentials on your computer. This will make sure that any virus, spyware or other malicious software on the computer is wiped out completely. Also if the weird behavior is due to any one of those, running the essentials will fix it.

Yeah, I tried your method, but I went to the start button, typed in regedit, and then went to your HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop area, and then since I did not see the "Toolbars" value, I instead deleted the TaskbarWinXP" value, I restarted explorer, but it did not seem to work,, I was thinking maybe it will take affect if I reboot, SO I started closing programs , (when I close one 3rd party program , the taskbar re-hid itself. Not sure if your fix was the reason or the 3rd party sw keeping something stuck or both? Also this is only about 20 minutes into it,.. it could re-appear tommorrow.

BEWARE: we did the win7 service pack update in 2012 and it made our pc 10x SLOWER very very SLOW.. so we had to uninstall it , since then we don't do WIN7 updates out of fear, ALSO we found the hard way that that updating win7 destroys all your previous Restore points. WISH someone would come up with a very good 10x smaller quicker OS that would force MS to do the same. They just keep adding more and more garbage to the point that I am not sure that they even know what its doing most of the time... laugh,,. never forget the time about 10-15 years ago when BIll Gates went on National TV to demo new Windows... the system did a freeze up ... how embarassing.. but it also points up that even MS doesn't really know what is going to happen in their system as well as they should.. TIME TO START TOTALLY ANEW with a very lean mean quick as greased lightening OS that would blow the doors of win7 and win8. Actually CHROME works much faster than IE... thats for sure , you will find that out when you try to stream a video on 0.87 mbs wireless.

I had windows live updates waiting - turns out this was the reason the taskbar wouldn't autohide. Now the updates are running, the taskbar is dropping away again. Everyone may want to check...

It is almost always a "new" icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar as you described. As for the others, that is the idea behind the Notification Area. To show notifications. It isn't a bug when that is the cause.
