"Windows couldn't remove your computer from the homegroup."

I have a laptop and a desktop which were both participaing in a Homegroup.  It stopped working, so I tried to "leave the Homegroup" from both machines, intending to recreate it.  By the way, standard networking and file sharing is still working.  The desktop allowed me to leave the Homegroup, but I receive the "Windows couldn't remove your computer from the homegroup" message on the laptop.  I have run the network and homegroup troubleshooters numerous times on both machines.  I have also researched and tried everything I could find on the web, with no sucess.  Please tell me how I can reset the Homegroup settings on my laptop.

Here is a solution that might work.  It worked for me. 

"Researched the problem and found the solution. A file was corrupted and deleting it got the PNRP service running. The file was recreated correctly when the PNRP service started up. Here's the file for future reference:

C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking\idstore.sst"

    This was one of the most informative posts on this Homegroup problem so I'm reporting that after 12+ hours effort I am finally SUCCESSFUL at resolving it.

    That was the good news.  The actual details that tipped it into working mode are however a little sketchy as I was trying so many things.

    My best guess as to what was the ultimate factor is either one or a combination of:

    1. Changing HomeGroup Provider to "Local Service"  Homegroup Listener stay as 'local system account' (I'd previously fiddled with a number of these following another post)
    2. Changing the name of the Computer even though there was no apparent name conflict on my network
    3. Removing old version of Java (probably coincidental)
    4. Turning off and on Microsoft Security Essentials
    5. Removing the fixed IP address my Desktop was using

    Some other comments after my multiple failed attempts.

    1. Installing a WIFI card on my Desktop probably helped but didn't immediately resolve Homegroup issues when it was initially installed
    2. Attempting to use Homegroup to Share my "Drives" library was maybe one of the things that stuffed things up.  When attempting to do this resulted in errors saying that root of drives can't be shared.
    3. Changing the Log On account for the various services was probably not a smart thing to do.  I ended up in a rabbit hole of incompatible logon error messages
    4. Resetting the router to a basic environment didn't immediately resolve anything but may have helped the network troubleshooter fix things automatically

    Good luck if you're still seeking resolutions though.

    Unfortunately NONE of these have worked for me - tried just about everything including a system restore which failed so now I'm stumped.  Any other ideas?

    I have wasted a many hours and days searching for solutions to this problem. I have not been able to find a solution to this problem. Everything I have ever come across I have done and still no luck. On my mom's laptop the homegroup works perfectly but on mine it doesn't. I'm stumped and have just about had it. I'll go back to the old way of using a flash drive to transfer data from one laptop to the other. It is freaking ridiculous that I have to do that.
