Windows 7 ask's "enter network password" when accessing Window XP Machine

Hi All,

I have two PC's one with Windows XP Pro & the other with Windows 7 Pro. I have set up a network & it seems to be working but when i try to access my XP Machine from Windows 7 in ask me to Enter Network Password. I have tried to enter my login password & that did not work, i tried to turn off the password from teh xp machine and it still asks. What can i do to fix this problem. From my xp machine i can access the windows 7 pc fine so i dont understand why W7 is asking for this network password.

Did some searches on the net and below is what i did to solve the problem that was occuring

Permitting Network Access Without a Password

To allow users to log onto their computers without a password and then access the XP Professional machine without a password, you must make a security policy change:

Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.
Expand Local Policies | Security Options.
Double-click Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only, which is enabled by default. Disable this option and click OK.

this stopped the network access dialog box appearing when tryin to access my xp machine from windows 7 ! !

Normally what it wants is a domain\username

the domain is probably the computer name.

there is normally a checkmark box to save it as well

If I may say so this has been one of the most useful and entertaining threads I've seen.

One of the answers on here worked for me, but I'd just add that it seems after changing network settings, even in W7, I had to reboot.

It's amazing to me with machines of such power these days (TB drives, GBs of RAM, faster than a speeding bullet) you still have to reboot to get things to work.

Is there any other way I can acess this 'local security policy'?

Yes - please read all 72 replies in this ancient thread, then take appropriate action.

Sorry Oberwald, I've re-searched the thread and cannot see any other way to access the local security policy on my XP home netbook. The dates are the same and I've tried sharing folders on XP machine.

I've now had an extra frustration in that this time I cannot even see the netbook on the network from the W7 machine, whereas before I could.

WilliamBoone5555: Thanks, but the keyboard does respond, but some buttons are stuck down. So it just types 'aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa' or 'zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz' any time I am near anything with space for typed info.

edit: I seem to now have access! I think I was unable to access the netbook because while looking in the Computer Name tab it had renamed it 'aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa'. I somehow managed to get it to stay at just 'aaaa' and then it suddenly appeared on the W7 network screen. I then had access. I believe it was the fact that no folders were shared which was my issue.
