Also, while it is open, it keeps dominating the pc control by making it the active application every few seconds. If I go to another window it soon reverts back to WMP as the active application.
This is a new computer. It didn't happen at first, but started happening a few days after installing iTunes. I realized I was still running Vista SP1 so I downloaded and installed SP2. It ran for a while ok then after a few hours of running the WMP began opening again.
sometime it starts at startup, and sometime it starts after the computer is up and running. The last time it began happening I was in the middle of another windows software update and was not actively working on the computer. Just letting the update run.
It won't let me disable it with the task manager either. As soon as I stop the application it opens right back up again.

Click 'Start' >Type Services in the search box
Click 'Services' with the gear icon
On the left, find the service for (Windows Media Player)
Double-click the service, and change the startup type from Automatic to Manual.

I searched my documents and settings map for viruses with the lastest AVG free version and it came up with a trojan horse infection and moved it to the vault. This solved the popping up of WMP :D!
Furthermore the trojan was named "Trojan horse Agent2.BMMK"

EDIT: I also have the Lycosa keyboard but have never had a problem with the WMP pop-ups until today. Might have been the keyboard but then again everything went fine after the removal of the trojan.
Read through all of these and none of them worked but this did!!
Ive never taken the time to respond to any of these because usually there is a answer that fixes the issue. I fix computers for a living so im really good at fixing just about anything so when this came about and stumped me at the persons house, i decide to take it upon myself to figure it out. None of these posts fixed the issue. not keyboard issue, none of the turn off windows media services or uninstall it. To me thats not a good answer, and the problem that is causing it, is probably still a problem. well turns out it was. I ran malware bytes, every program from bleeping computers, hitman pro, norton antivirus was installed and everything was clean. still got the issue. i took the hard drive out of that computer and put it into my hard drive dock i use to fix computers attached to my computer. I ran a antivirus scan on the entire drive using free avast antivirus and it found 2 infections. (another reason i hate norton) turns out one was in the system volume information (crypt-rqa virus) and there was one other. i wish i took both down but this was the one that i think was the issue. anyway, removed both and then put the drive back into the computer and booted it up. No more issue, windows media player is working when "I" open it and stays closed when i close it. Hopefully this helps people out. Not everyone has a way to take the drive out and run a scan from another computer but maybe just scanning using avast (in this instance) instead of a different antivirus program would help. Tried that, still does it.
I had the same problem, it was hardware. I think it was the keyboard with a sticky media button or it could have been the media headphones, I can't remember. Anyway I suggest that you unplug all media related hardware and replace the keyboard and see if you still get the problem. If you don't then start adding the media related hardware one by one until the problem reoccurs and then you have found the offender.
