Also, while it is open, it keeps dominating the pc control by making it the active application every few seconds. If I go to another window it soon reverts back to WMP as the active application.
This is a new computer. It didn't happen at first, but started happening a few days after installing iTunes. I realized I was still running Vista SP1 so I downloaded and installed SP2. It ran for a while ok then after a few hours of running the WMP began opening again.
sometime it starts at startup, and sometime it starts after the computer is up and running. The last time it began happening I was in the middle of another windows software update and was not actively working on the computer. Just letting the update run.
It won't let me disable it with the task manager either. As soon as I stop the application it opens right back up again.

Click 'Start' >Type Services in the search box
Click 'Services' with the gear icon
On the left, find the service for (Windows Media Player)
Double-click the service, and change the startup type from Automatic to Manual.

I searched my documents and settings map for viruses with the lastest AVG free version and it came up with a trojan horse infection and moved it to the vault. This solved the popping up of WMP :D!
Furthermore the trojan was named "Trojan horse Agent2.BMMK"

EDIT: I also have the Lycosa keyboard but have never had a problem with the WMP pop-ups until today. Might have been the keyboard but then again everything went fine after the removal of the trojan.
Same thing happened to me... I was listening on Spotify and then I paused and put my headset off... then I heard my own voice... Was kinda freaked but ended up opening WMP and finding a video I recorded running... Read this and started a virus scan... It found a vulnerability in Adobe Premiere and directly after that WMP could be closed :)
12 pages of going no-where? Here is my 2 cents of maybe help.
If you have one and only one media player on your pc that searches the web for anything ,
Turn its web search setting to off ,
Turn the media player off,
Go to autoplay and set it to ask me each time,
Go to computer services and see if it is listed there , if it is set it to manual.,
Restart your pc.
Go back and see if the settings are still the way you set them,
If any one of your settings are not set that way,
Go to controle panel and set it to the default player ( if the custom setting was / is used setting it to default may not stay that way usually becouse another player is set as the default elsware ).
Go to the one media players websight and update it..Do not let the update set itself as the default player. make sure its web search is off
Turn it off .
If you have other media players on your pc do the same steps for each player , one player at a time . But do not set any of them as a default player.
Now put a music cd in a drive . A pop up should ask you what to do ,that pop up should show the first player(it was set as the default prevously) as the default , and list any other players. Play the default player, ifit plays properly (web search is off) , Turn the player off and eject the cd.
Put the same cd back in the drive.When the pop up pops up ,choose one of the other players if you have them .dose it play properly? If it does ,do thesame for the other players.
Now you should have one or more media players with there web searching set to off. and one is set as the default player.,and they , one and all play properly.
If the default media player will play video disks play one (whith the web search still set to off). Does it play video properly?
If so, do the same with any other media players. (with web searching off).
Now , you should have one or more , media players , that play music and video properly . And becouse they are all set to
MANUALLY start , in every setting in the computer and all of there web searching features are OFF.
THEY CAN not start up in any way by there self.
HOWEVER , there are more steps to do if the above , did not solve the problem.
Becouse there has been so many people me two ing this question ,I will call it reply one and start another reply called reply two. That way which reply helped would be easy to see.

I can send screen shot. I do not have a service for Windows Media Player. Even though I have windows media player and am watching a video on it now.
windows media player constantly pops up while gaming and at many other times. it will pop up even if i am looking @ the desktop. it's killing me.......
