Also, while it is open, it keeps dominating the pc control by making it the active application every few seconds. If I go to another window it soon reverts back to WMP as the active application.
This is a new computer. It didn't happen at first, but started happening a few days after installing iTunes. I realized I was still running Vista SP1 so I downloaded and installed SP2. It ran for a while ok then after a few hours of running the WMP began opening again.
sometime it starts at startup, and sometime it starts after the computer is up and running. The last time it began happening I was in the middle of another windows software update and was not actively working on the computer. Just letting the update run.
It won't let me disable it with the task manager either. As soon as I stop the application it opens right back up again.

Click 'Start' >Type Services in the search box
Click 'Services' with the gear icon
On the left, find the service for (Windows Media Player)
Double-click the service, and change the startup type from Automatic to Manual.

I searched my documents and settings map for viruses with the lastest AVG free version and it came up with a trojan horse infection and moved it to the vault. This solved the popping up of WMP :D!
Furthermore the trojan was named "Trojan horse Agent2.BMMK"

EDIT: I also have the Lycosa keyboard but have never had a problem with the WMP pop-ups until today. Might have been the keyboard but then again everything went fine after the removal of the trojan.
At least you can uninstall WMP on Windows 7!
That is what I'm currently trying since I just started getting these random WMP popups, almost like a trojan or virus like behaviour, IMO.
Tried disabling all the options I could find in WMP to disable sharing and then tried disabling the service but that didn't help at all :(
So now I"m uninstalling it and seeing how that goes.
this is exactly my problem - windows media player keeps randomly opening and even if you close/end process, just keep opening and forces itself into front view, minimizing everything and completely rendering the pc useless. Doesn't matter if you try to minimize it, keeps forcing everything to minimize. this goes on for about 5-10 mins, and then for some reason it just simply stops and closes for good. if i try and play music (ie play a playlist) while it has one of these 'spasms' it just keep skipping through each song playing it for 1 second then selecting the next... i have also disabled the WMP services mentioned before.
This has the hallmarks of a virus/trojan, but i'm very carefull what sites i use and have scanned the computer with AVG/G-DATA/SpyBOT/Nortons360/Windows Defender all were up-todate and all came up with nothing...

Well, I never narrowed down exactly what the original cause of this but for the moment it seems to have gone away. It seems to go away as mysteriously and suddenly as it appeared. One thing I did notice last time it happened though was that at the very bottom of media player you could see there was a button with an arrow saying update or something so it seems that WMP is automatically updating itself over the web even though I could've swore I told it not to! Also, on the 2nd Windows 7 system I've seen this happen I've run the Windows Media Center Setup process so I don't know if that's just a coincidence or something else going on there?
