Also, while it is open, it keeps dominating the pc control by making it the active application every few seconds. If I go to another window it soon reverts back to WMP as the active application.
This is a new computer. It didn't happen at first, but started happening a few days after installing iTunes. I realized I was still running Vista SP1 so I downloaded and installed SP2. It ran for a while ok then after a few hours of running the WMP began opening again.
sometime it starts at startup, and sometime it starts after the computer is up and running. The last time it began happening I was in the middle of another windows software update and was not actively working on the computer. Just letting the update run.
It won't let me disable it with the task manager either. As soon as I stop the application it opens right back up again.

Click 'Start' >Type Services in the search box
Click 'Services' with the gear icon
On the left, find the service for (Windows Media Player)
Double-click the service, and change the startup type from Automatic to Manual.

I searched my documents and settings map for viruses with the lastest AVG free version and it came up with a trojan horse infection and moved it to the vault. This solved the popping up of WMP :D!
Furthermore the trojan was named "Trojan horse Agent2.BMMK"

EDIT: I also have the Lycosa keyboard but have never had a problem with the WMP pop-ups until today. Might have been the keyboard but then again everything went fine after the removal of the trojan.

I have an HP TouchSmart tx2 (tablet) running Win 7 and am experiencing most of the above problems. I do not get the start menu problem. I do, however have a problem when clicking on any program on my desk top icons. I have tried nearly every one of the above recommendations. NONE of them appear to work. he problem is so severe that I cannot even get past the selection of the "Turn on/off" suggestion mentioned by Marilyn on June 2, 2010. At this point the ONLY use for my laptop is to play the few albums in my Music library...
I'm not sure this is a keyboard problem, i also have a razor lycosa keyboard, however, if it was the issue wouldn't it still be continuing now? I'm running Win amp as an alternative to WMP, and i havn't had the problem since, if it was a sticky touch pad (the touch keys on the top left of the lycosa) wouldn't it be still be doing the exact same thing but with win amp?
Is there a way we could test this theory? ie does anyone know where we can see a log of what keys are being pressed including the media function keys?
We could look at that and see if it correlates with WMP opening by itself.
Anything would be a help. Since writing, I've tried to troubleshoot the problem by performing a "clean boot". No luck. I get to the START box, enter msconfig.exe, press Enter and I get --- Windows Media Center. Total corruption I suppose...
