Also, while it is open, it keeps dominating the pc control by making it the active application every few seconds. If I go to another window it soon reverts back to WMP as the active application.
This is a new computer. It didn't happen at first, but started happening a few days after installing iTunes. I realized I was still running Vista SP1 so I downloaded and installed SP2. It ran for a while ok then after a few hours of running the WMP began opening again.
sometime it starts at startup, and sometime it starts after the computer is up and running. The last time it began happening I was in the middle of another windows software update and was not actively working on the computer. Just letting the update run.
It won't let me disable it with the task manager either. As soon as I stop the application it opens right back up again.

Click 'Start' >Type Services in the search box
Click 'Services' with the gear icon
On the left, find the service for (Windows Media Player)
Double-click the service, and change the startup type from Automatic to Manual.

I searched my documents and settings map for viruses with the lastest AVG free version and it came up with a trojan horse infection and moved it to the vault. This solved the popping up of WMP :D!
Furthermore the trojan was named "Trojan horse Agent2.BMMK"

EDIT: I also have the Lycosa keyboard but have never had a problem with the WMP pop-ups until today. Might have been the keyboard but then again everything went fine after the removal of the trojan.
Hi people. As I have mentioned it on August 01 that I have updated driver for my Razer Lycosa keyboard to version 2.05 for Win7 64 and set the media keys to default setting to WMA, I had no problems since. So yes people, everything seems to be asociated with the Razer Lycosa keyboard and most likely the old driver. I didn't have a massive problem with WMA taking over like some people did (maybe because of OS they have) but it was quite alarming to see it just pop up. Anyway, the driver update and/or changing the key association works! Hopefully for everyone.
hi guys i recently had this problem and i posted on this forum to help out. i found the problem to be with the keyboard i recently bought from razor. i have the razor lycossa keyboard with the touch screen controls in the top right. i also installed the software that went with the keyboard. to solve the wmp problem i simply right clicked the razor symbol down on ur bar thing or watever and a keyboard control screen pops up. i went to the wmp option at the top of the screen window and changed it FROM wmp to another program i dont use or have. this immediatly fixed the problem. if u do not see or have this software installed or u are using a different type of keybaord from the one specified try doing the same thing with your setup or if this does not work try just simply switching keybaords. i also contacted razor about this problem and they do have a helpful problem report where u can email them your problem and wait for a response. they do say if u are a person who has been affected by this problem you can submit for a knew keyboard. i hope this fixes your guys problems it fixed mine. good luck!
I too think it's a keyboard problem. Up until a week ago, I never had this problem. I was using a Logitech G15 keyboard. I decided to purchase a Razer Lycosa and it started happening almost immediately after I installed the new keyboard. It's exactly like everyone describes. WMP forces itself as the active application, rendering the computer useless. Also, after messing with it a while, I eventually cannot use certain keys on the keyboard. If I plug in my old keyboard, it works fine. Sometimes I'm lucky and WMP just hangs out minimized at the bottom without forcing itself. But other times I have to reboot. Have tried going into services and disabling, but its not working. Tried updating my keyboard drivers but that's not solved it either. Thinking about returning the keyboard which really bums me out! I am on Windows Vista and so far as I can tell, there is no way to uninstall WMP.
I'm having the EXACT same issue though on windows 7. This keyboard does do this from time to time as i've found, you have to unplug it and plug it back in and it works fine, though annoying. And this WMP hijacking problem has been happening since i've gotten this keyboard. I'm pretty dissapointed too :(
