Also, while it is open, it keeps dominating the pc control by making it the active application every few seconds. If I go to another window it soon reverts back to WMP as the active application.
This is a new computer. It didn't happen at first, but started happening a few days after installing iTunes. I realized I was still running Vista SP1 so I downloaded and installed SP2. It ran for a while ok then after a few hours of running the WMP began opening again.
sometime it starts at startup, and sometime it starts after the computer is up and running. The last time it began happening I was in the middle of another windows software update and was not actively working on the computer. Just letting the update run.
It won't let me disable it with the task manager either. As soon as I stop the application it opens right back up again.

Click 'Start' >Type Services in the search box
Click 'Services' with the gear icon
On the left, find the service for (Windows Media Player)
Double-click the service, and change the startup type from Automatic to Manual.

I searched my documents and settings map for viruses with the lastest AVG free version and it came up with a trojan horse infection and moved it to the vault. This solved the popping up of WMP :D!
Furthermore the trojan was named "Trojan horse Agent2.BMMK"

EDIT: I also have the Lycosa keyboard but have never had a problem with the WMP pop-ups until today. Might have been the keyboard but then again everything went fine after the removal of the trojan.
I'm having the same problem with media player as everyone else, but I have a laptop with no external (damn thing popping up now!!!). I've very surprised that no one is getting my other issue. a short while before I started getting the media player pop up, I was getting (and still do) the equivalent of pressing the windows key which pulls up my start menu. this started very shortly after I did a clean install of windows 7 on my pc. I work in IT (computer support) and I'm ashamed to say that I've been dealing with this for months (i don't use the pc daily, but still...). So for me, these two items work as a team. first the start menu pops up, then within a second or two, media player opens up. and it occurs all during my comp (there it goes again!!!)..uting session. very annoying and i've be prolonging a clean install, but if I can't figure it out, I guess I'll have no choice. I will (also) try to update my input drivers, but as stated previously, I don't have a razor or external keyboard. wish me luck..

Razer123's advise is the best option for overall stability.
My first fix was to uninstall the keyboard from the device manager and then hot unplug / re-plug the keyboard to reinstall it. This seem to have stopped the issue with WMV from constantly loading and continually trying to autoplay. This leads me to believe that the driver was corrupt or some change was implemented (but I could not find any update to validate this) that was causing the issue. After the keyboard re-installed, there was a different driver version applied than what was on there before I uninstalled the keyboard and reinstalled.
However, there were still some minor quirks going on that I did not like with certain keys not working at random, so I followed Razer123's info and installed the win7 drivers from the Razer site and have been running smooth since. In fact, the Light On "All Keys" now actually stays on and remembers that state is now "saved" where as before the driver update, I a random state might be loaded and I would either have WASD lit up...nothing or all. Go with the driver update and if you need to uninstall the keyboard from device manager and reinstall either through a re-boot or unplug/re-plug device.
