Also, while it is open, it keeps dominating the pc control by making it the active application every few seconds. If I go to another window it soon reverts back to WMP as the active application.
This is a new computer. It didn't happen at first, but started happening a few days after installing iTunes. I realized I was still running Vista SP1 so I downloaded and installed SP2. It ran for a while ok then after a few hours of running the WMP began opening again.
sometime it starts at startup, and sometime it starts after the computer is up and running. The last time it began happening I was in the middle of another windows software update and was not actively working on the computer. Just letting the update run.
It won't let me disable it with the task manager either. As soon as I stop the application it opens right back up again.

Click 'Start' >Type Services in the search box
Click 'Services' with the gear icon
On the left, find the service for (Windows Media Player)
Double-click the service, and change the startup type from Automatic to Manual.

I searched my documents and settings map for viruses with the lastest AVG free version and it came up with a trojan horse infection and moved it to the vault. This solved the popping up of WMP :D!
Furthermore the trojan was named "Trojan horse Agent2.BMMK"

EDIT: I also have the Lycosa keyboard but have never had a problem with the WMP pop-ups until today. Might have been the keyboard but then again everything went fine after the removal of the trojan.
This is absurd: I find a thread filled with eleven pages of people experiencing the same problem for over two full years, with a Microsoft program, implicating two Microsoft operating systems... with not a single salvageable answer from "Microsoft Answers" to be found. (Indeed, the most helpful so far has been "just uninstall the damn thing," which I consider fantastic advice... of course, it didn't come from a Microsoft employee.)
Let me try to articulate what so many have already described, accurately and precisely, in the vain hope that "75th time's the charm" (if the "people who had this question" count at the top of this thread is to be believed):
For some inexplicable reason, something utterly unprecedented outside the realm of malicious viruses and malware is clearly endemic to Microsoft's media player's interaction with... wait for it... Microsoft's operating system. While I'm sure this situation is restricted to certain computer configurations (or there'd be more than 75 people registering to complain), it is no less inexcusable given the sheer inanity of the issue: No program should be capable of hijacking its own operating system by forcing repeated, untriggered activations, at random times, incessantly interrupting computer use for apparently random durations, for over two years, without anyone bothering to figure out what's wrong!
For heaven's sake, there are enough people having this problem to warrant introducing an option to throttle repeated WMP activations in a patch, don't you think? Googling "windows media player keeps popping up" --- as a quoted phrase, no less, thus excluding any other variation of phrasing this issue --- turns up over a hundred thousand hits!
hi tried this 3 or 4 times still kept poping up... BUT HOORAY FOUND THE CURE,,,
1/ CLICK START
2/ CLICK DEFAULT PROGRAMS. THEN CLICK.. SET PROGRAM ACCESS AND COMP.DEFAULTS THEN CLICK CUSTOM FIND MEDIA PLAYER AND UNCHECK MEIDA CENTER THEN OK. I FOUND THIS STOPPED THE MEDIA CENTER OPENING..OK I CANT WATCH TV ON PC ..BUT WHO CARES ,CAN NOW USE COMP
I'm having the same problem. I downloaded something and it had me select media center as its file place to open at. (sorry i dont speak well when it comes to tech) I tried going to settings and everything but that didn't work. I have a feeling I have a virus, but my AVG got deleted a while back by someone who borrowed my computer (without me knowing) So when I went to download AVG again, I clicked save when the download popped up and it opened in windows media center. So I can't download anything, WMC keeps popping up, and I think I have a virus. Don't know how to fix it....help?
