Also, while it is open, it keeps dominating the pc control by making it the active application every few seconds. If I go to another window it soon reverts back to WMP as the active application.
This is a new computer. It didn't happen at first, but started happening a few days after installing iTunes. I realized I was still running Vista SP1 so I downloaded and installed SP2. It ran for a while ok then after a few hours of running the WMP began opening again.
sometime it starts at startup, and sometime it starts after the computer is up and running. The last time it began happening I was in the middle of another windows software update and was not actively working on the computer. Just letting the update run.
It won't let me disable it with the task manager either. As soon as I stop the application it opens right back up again.

Click 'Start' >Type Services in the search box
Click 'Services' with the gear icon
On the left, find the service for (Windows Media Player)
Double-click the service, and change the startup type from Automatic to Manual.

I searched my documents and settings map for viruses with the lastest AVG free version and it came up with a trojan horse infection and moved it to the vault. This solved the popping up of WMP :D!
Furthermore the trojan was named "Trojan horse Agent2.BMMK"

EDIT: I also have the Lycosa keyboard but have never had a problem with the WMP pop-ups until today. Might have been the keyboard but then again everything went fine after the removal of the trojan.

I was having this same problem recently. I read through here and tried uninstalling my keyboard, turning the WMP to manual, ect.
None of what I tried worked.
Then I went into the Options menu under Tools (If you dont know much about computers, you can right click the bar at the top of your screen and select "Show menu bar" if you cant see the Tools menu) I turned off a few default options:
-Add remote media files to library when played - Under Player
-Display media information from internet - Under Privacy
-Update music files by retrieving information from the internet - Under Privacy
-Download usage rights when I play or sync a file - Under Privacy
-Automatically check if protected files need to be refreshed - Under Privacy
-Retrieve additional information from the internet - Under Library
Mostly because I don't like my applications sending/receiving information without my approval ANYWAY.
As soon as I clicked apply and closed the window... no more popping up.
I'm not positive all of these options need to be changed to stop this from occurring but this worked for me and I didn't feel like trying them all 1 at a time to find the magic combination.
I bought a Lycosa keyboard and this immediately started happening. Looks like Razer needs to clean up it's act.
Guy, please, it is not the keyboard for everybody. We are having this same problem on a standard Gateway laptop, but the problem only started after we upgraded the laptop to Windows 7. I suspect that this is a problem inherent with Windows 7 and I hope there is an answer.
