Gateway laptop: Plugged in, not charging

I bought my Gateway laptop in January. Randomly last night it said "Plugged in, not charging" on the battery meter. I know this is NOT an issue with Gateway because I have googled this issue and the common problems seems to be Vista. I tried following these four steps that some have claimed work

1.

Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager .

2.

Expand the Batteries category.

3.

Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall .

WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver.

4.

On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes .

Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes .

Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging."

but I didn't have much luck with that at all. I really need someone to tell me how to fix this problem because the fact that this has clearly been a big issue for Vista users everywhere over the past 2 or so years is completely unacceptable and honestly I'm getting really annoyed with the issue. So please help me with this Vista problem and I know for a fact its not a problem with Gateway because it's a practically new computer.

Here is what I've done and it worked for me:

first 2 steps as you have written

step 3: instead of uninstall, I've selected disable. I've waited for 2-3 minutes and enabled is again.

Once I've enabled, it started to charge.

I can't guarantee it will work for everyone, but it worked for me. Give a try and let me know if it worked.

hi I am using sony vaio E-Series laptop bought it 1 month before. I faced the same problem that the battery charging upto 80% on my windows 7, but when i shut it down and try charging the battery it was charging properly. I got a solution from a site (http://digitalpbk.com/hardware/sony-vaio-enable-battery-care-function-improve-battery-life) to charge my battery to 100%. This is not at all a hardware issue. There is a setting in sony care to make my battery to charge fully. So Please search in your manufacturer site/forums or try to find any applications like what i have sony care and look for any battery settings, surely you will get it. Hope this helps. Thanks and Regards, Vijai

    M

Leakey- Mine would start charging again too if I took the battery out and put it back in. i did this over and over and over again, but Never got to 100%.  It was the only way I could unplug it without it immediately going into sleep mode. If it said 'plugged in no charging' I couldn't unplug it.

Just going to the Gateway download site fixed my Gateway which is running Vista 32 bit. I have fully charge the battery several times since my last post will no more "plugged in not charging" problems.  IT ALWAYS FULLY CHARGES so thank you again!  Maybe they will have a Win7 fix soon.

Finally after 3 days of intensive trial and error method i can assert that i have a solution at hand. Now how long that solution is going to last is something we have to wait and see. This solution applies to, i will assume to getways with win 7 (64bit) but specifically to getways MD26 or MD24. The solution involves a bunch of things to be done, first is to get an updated version of the computer BIOS from the getway website http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/mydl.asp?tab=MY&os=All%20Windows%20Operating%20Systems, after that is done, assuming the computer is on AC adapter already and charging, you let it get to its false optimal charge( whatever percentage that it) and then you shut down the computer and remove the battery. Then insert the battery and plug in the AC adapter and DO NOT turn on the computer, wait for the RED light on the computer to come on again indicating probably a false optimal charge again, repeat the process of removing the battery and inserting it again....( i did it 3 times and the third time the duration it took for it to turn red was a little longer compared to the first and second). Depending on ur patience level turn on the computer and see to wat percentage it has risen to. Its important to note that this solution is for getways win 7 (64 bits) for the other ones with 32 bit, getway have on thier website the BIOS update to eliminate the problem.

Now am waiting to see if am going back to the same problem or not, and if i do, how long does it take.

    Thank you.
