Warner Music CD's sound is distorted on Dell Windows 7 computer

I have a new Dell computer operating on Windows 7. Some cd's will not play or download on Windows Media Player or iTunes as the sound is totally distorted. These same cd's were fine on my old Dell with Windows XP. The cd's also play on Hi Fi's and other computers without any problems. Is this a problem with Windows 7? (all the cd's seem to be produced by Warner Music or their associated companies).

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi ASTRA52,

I would suggest you to run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.

Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Hardware and Sound, click Configure a device.‌  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

I would also suggest you to install the latest sound drivers compatible for Windows 7 from the manufacturer’s website.

    I too have a problem with a WB CD (Linda Ronstadt, remastered) on a Win 7 Home Premium Dell PC and found this thread. 

    My inbuilt drive is: "TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L633C ATA Device"

    I have an external drive: "TSSTcorp CDDVDW SE-S084C USB Device"

    The CD is distorted when played on either of these drives (Note that they are both DVD drives...).  Having found this thread I bought a cheap and chearful CD reader :  "TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-1902B USB Device".  Surprise, surprise!! The CD plays (and rips) perfectly.

    When I ripped it I made an error and ripped it to the same folder where the faulty tracks were  and discovered something interesting (to me, at least) - each faulty track is 16 bytes greater than the tracks ripped from the CD reader.  So, using the CD reader I ripped a CD that was already ripped from a DVD drive and discovered that the DVD ripped tracks are 21 bytes greater than those from the CD reader.

    So in summary the issue appears to be that some WB CDs won't play (or rip) properly in an environment that comprises Win 7 and a DVD reader.

    One final thought.  My CD is a remastered version of a vinyl album and was produced in Germany and purchased from Amazon.  I suppose that this CD was produced a few years ago (when DRM was a hot potato) and has been sitting on the shelves for a few years.

    I stopped the automatic rip and then just played all the songs at randon, only for a few seconds, kept closing WMP and opening again from different icons..eg, my computer etc, and after about 5 mins, the CD plays fine, then I simply start the rip.

    Thank you for these useful tips! I have a relatively new Dell machine with a DVD drive that doesn't play certain Warner CDs properly ("Erato" publishing for classical music), giving lots of background noise as described in this thread. The drive is a TSSTcorpDVD+-RW TS-H653G.

    I experimented along similar lines to you, and found that in my case the best thing was to double click on tracks a long way apart repeatedly e.g. track 1, 17, 4, 16, 2, 16 etc. only allowing each one to start for only a split second. (I didn't need to close and reopen WMP.) After 10-20 of these double clicks, the drive played the CD perfectly; perhaps this disk-thrashing allowed it to calibrate itself to the correct layer somehow, avoiding all the noise put in by the copy control protection. I was then able to get an AccurateRip certified rip with EAC software. I just play the mp3s now, so don't mind if it's tricky to play the acual CD again.

    Note: if the CD is stopped and left in the drive for a while, or ejected and put back in, the drive "forgets" how to play it properly and you have to go through the procedure above again.

    got exactly the same problem and thinking of getting an external CD drive as 21 of my CDs now wont burn - has anyone solved this Warner Cds problem with an external USB driver - if so which one. Going crazy here

    Just return the laptop if the CD player is junk, don't try to work around this issue on your own.

    Either get them to replace the CD drive with one that works, or get a refund to purchase a different brand or model.
