Warner Music CD's sound is distorted on Dell Windows 7 computer

I have a new Dell computer operating on Windows 7. Some cd's will not play or download on Windows Media Player or iTunes as the sound is totally distorted. These same cd's were fine on my old Dell with Windows XP. The cd's also play on Hi Fi's and other computers without any problems. Is this a problem with Windows 7? (all the cd's seem to be produced by Warner Music or their associated companies).

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi ASTRA52,

I would suggest you to run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.

Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Hardware and Sound, click Configure a device.‌  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

I would also suggest you to install the latest sound drivers compatible for Windows 7 from the manufacturer’s website.

    Hi everyone,

It's now been over a week since I sent my query via the Dell Tech Support form and I haven't heard back from them so far. I'm about to use my reference number and email them with a reminder noting that the problem is still apparent etc. I just checked one of the other threads about this issue where another user has replied and mentions a lack of success with Dell Tech Support:

"I've had a fair bit of contact with Dell Tech Support about this and haven't got anywhere I'm afraid. Despite me being very clear about the issue and informing them that others have exactly the same problem they keep telling me I've probably just scratched my cds. Not very helpful!

I've also just tried playing the album while my laptop is running Ubuntu rather than Windows 7 but unfortunately have exactly the same problem. "

So I have now emiled Dell enquiring about my pending issue request, however after reading the post above I have taken into consideration the fact that I may receive a similar reply. I think we may be more likely to achieve succes with a greater number of queries, so I thought I'd suggest this for those of us experiencing this issue with Dell hardware; if any of you guys have the time, why not take a few minutes to fill in the Tech Support email form, briefly explaining the problem you have and highlighting the fact that a number of other users are experiencing this issue. I think it might help.

So if anyone wants to give it a try, please find below the summary which I put in the form (in case anyone prefers to use this and save themselves some time for typing it out or articulating the problem) and the links to the US and Europe/UK Dell tech support forms (if any Dell users experiencing this are outside of those areas you can use the same link, then simply change the country displayed toward the top left of the page, then select contact at the bottom of the page then Tech Support>Email). You may need your service tag to hand although I think it can be generated by filling in your details. Hopefully if we bug them enough we'll finally be able to resolve this issue. Good Luck.

"The audio from certain CDs is coming through distorted in playback, after ripping  files to the PC and transferring the ripped files to my iPod. It is constant as opposed to intermittent & occurs with all media players I have tried. It only occurs with certain remastered CDs. I was unable to use the send system info option with this info. The problem has occurred since I first got the system before any changes were madeI have tried running a troubleshooter, driver updates say the drivers are up to date, I have tried resetting all audio settings and have posted the problem on support forums where several other users are experiencing the same issue.I have confirmed the discs work fine on other systems, I have disabled other audio hardwareI ran dell diagnostics and no errors were found. I just tried a suggested work around posted by a Dell support technician on the following thread which also concerns this issue.

    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3517/t/19329555.aspx

Again I had no success but it may be worth a try. I replied to inform the Dell supoprt technician so might be worth keeping an eye on the above thread too.

I've also got this exact same problem with playing Warner CDs on a brand new Dell 1764 laptop that also has the TTST Corp T633Cdrive.

Thanks for pursuing this, FST - I'm watching this space with baited breath.

I have a TTST Corp T633C drive too. At this point I suspect the issue may be related to the drive's firmware. I have a region free media player which I used to play imported Region 1 DVDs on my desktop PC, however when I tried to do this using the software on my laptop it did not work. After a little research I found that this was likely to be due to the Drive's firmware. Seems possible that this is a similar issue.

I mentioned previously I would post any updates I received; a few solutions have been offered on the thread I origianlly posted. None of the suggested solutions have worked for me but maybe others will have better luck. I have pasted the suggestions and a link to the thread below.

    "Hello FlyingSaucerTerror,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Answers Site.

As the issue occurs with only certain CDs and with more than one media player, for playback using Windows Media Player you may try optimizing the bass, stereo, and other audio effects by turning on or adjusting the SRS WOW Effects in Windows Media Player.

To do this, please see the link below:

Change bass, stereo, and other audio effects in Windows Media Player

Also, you may verify that Windows is up to date and you may also try contacting the PC manufacturer directly for an audio driver update for your specific computer model by clicking the link below:

After running the Dell diagnostic tests and finding no issues, I contacted dell customer support and I am currently awaiting a reply. I'll post the response up here when I receive it.
