Warner Music CD's sound is distorted on Dell Windows 7 computer

I have a new Dell computer operating on Windows 7. Some cd's will not play or download on Windows Media Player or iTunes as the sound is totally distorted. These same cd's were fine on my old Dell with Windows XP. The cd's also play on Hi Fi's and other computers without any problems. Is this a problem with Windows 7? (all the cd's seem to be produced by Warner Music or their associated companies).

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi ASTRA52,

I would suggest you to run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.

Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Hardware and Sound, click Configure a device.‌  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

I would also suggest you to install the latest sound drivers compatible for Windows 7 from the manufacturer’s website.

    I got to this thread since I had fuzzy sound playing Melee's Devils and Angels, via iTunes and WMP. Checked the small print ... yup, it's on Warner's. Surprised I haven't had problem before; I've uploaded hundreds. So I thought I'd try a rip, and it sounds perfect from hard drive. So that is the rather unsatisfactory answer from me  - rip and play. It is a pain if you just want to use the device as a cd player. I wanted to rip it anyway; I was only checking a track, so that's OK for me.

    Odd that the assumed copy protection only affects direct play, and appears masked or disposed of on rip. I haven't tried burning to see what happens to it then, but it may stay lost with any luck. Thanks for the discussion; helped me out anyway. 

    Sorry guys, fed false information. The versions that worked were ripped on 29th December 2009, which is about when I bought my brand new Windows 7 Dell system. Right now, if I rip, the distortion stays with the file, but old rips of the same cd are fine. I can't really be sure which computer I ripped 'em on. Either I'd ripped them on my old Windows XP computer and brought the (clean) files across when I synchronised, or I ripped them (clean) on the Windows 7 and one of those nice magic updates has introduced the problem for more recent rips.  Either way, as it stands, I can no longer get a clean sound on Warners cds, raw or recently ripped, and yet the exact same cd was ripped to a file in Dec 2009 which plays perfectly on either system.

    Sorry does NOT seem to be the answer. Warner Brothers CDs still distorting with AnyDVD installed. Only seems to be WB discs. Any other ideas?

    If you feel it's the copy protection scheme that causes the distortion, try a circumvention tool such as AnyDVD to see if your CD plays better. Other users mentioned that their rips were distorted too, so I am not sure external rips will work, unless again you use copy protection circumvention. From other users' feedback, the problem seems to be linked to the CD drive, a slightly different model from the same manufacturer worked fine. Maybe it's time to upgrade to a blu-ray player? As in, replacing your problem with a different one. ^-^ I always have AnyDVD on, so I can't tell if the few CDs I have with copy protection or from Warner Bros would have failed, but I ripped 2400 CDs from WMP with AnyDVD on, and without any playback problem so far.
