Warner Music CD's sound is distorted on Dell Windows 7 computer

I have a new Dell computer operating on Windows 7. Some cd's will not play or download on Windows Media Player or iTunes as the sound is totally distorted. These same cd's were fine on my old Dell with Windows XP. The cd's also play on Hi Fi's and other computers without any problems. Is this a problem with Windows 7? (all the cd's seem to be produced by Warner Music or their associated companies).

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi ASTRA52,

I would suggest you to run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.

Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under Hardware and Sound, click Configure a device.‌  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

I would also suggest you to install the latest sound drivers compatible for Windows 7 from the manufacturer’s website.

    Sounds good, I agree we should be able to copy discs we have already paid for, even if it's only into iTunes.

    My solution/workaround is by using an external Lacie drive via my (old) Mac desktop (the built-in drive in my newer laptop displays the problem). I hope the external drive still works fine on my new iMac when I get it.

    Like everyone else I experienced this problem and first noticed it when ripping a Prince CD into iTunes and also windows media player. I also noticed that the cd played perfectly on most audio cd players but not one I have that can also play mp3 cds.  One of the things I tried was re- recording the disc using Magix Audio Cleaning Lab and then burning to a recordable audio CD. The resultant audio was less than perfect and this leads me to believe that Warner also have included something in the audio stream. Anyway to cut a long story short the solution to this problem I have to be effective is to use a pc (I use an old hp one I have running widowsXP) fitted with a read only ide cd drive and configuring iTunes to detect errors. It does take longer to rip, but not as long as having to re record the audio.  This note is not intended to encourage people to pirate music but to copy what you have from one media to another which has now become legal in the UK.  If you like music and want to keep it-- pay for it in the first place

    I have a similar problem with many Warner CDs.

    A lot of them were bought used/second-hand so returning them is not a viable option.

    I have a laptop with built in optical drive TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633C ATA Drive; that one distorts the Warner discs, but no others - the Warner discs also play perfectly on all other players I have tried.

    I also have an iMac desktop with a USB external Lacie Lightscribe drive. That one plays all my discs, including Warner. So, I use that to import to iTunes on the iMac and then transfer tracks, albums etc to iTunes on the laptop via a USB stick. No problems so far.

    As for the cause, well, it really does look as if the Warner copy-protection is to blame; Warner refuse to deny the problem is their's. Perhaps a Warner representative could reply to this thread? Ha ha, only joking, that would show respect for customers!

    I agree that the discs are not really CDs, but all of my problem ones are clearly labelled as CDs. There is a very clear case of criminal misrepresentation here, but my local Trading Standards office is apparently in cahoots with Warner and they also refuse to take any action.

    I expect that none of the individual consumers on this forum have the resources to take on a commercial giant like Warner, and with the Consumer Protection organisations closing ranks to protect the manufacturers we stand no chance of getting it resolved.

    Still, I have a usable work-around so I'll just chalk it up to experience.

    I am having the same problem with my new HP Pavilion NoteBook and even updating the BIOS does Not help given that it seems its a direct CD Drive Firmware problem that can only be resolved by changing the CD/DVD drive. To confirm this, see the following LINK http://www.winmagazine.it/forum/index.php?topic=22990.0 which HP resolved the problem for a user changing the Drive.

    I was also hoping that it was a BIOS problem which would be easier to handle!
