The fix provided by David Vinod (a/k/a/ Sreekanth) worked. I followed the second 5 steps. Backing up now. Thank you!

2016-06-11T14:13:02+00:00 SuzanneK you're a star.
I was experiencing this backup error, it appears like many others after my machine was hijacked by MS and Windows 10 was installed despite my wishes. I immediately went back to Windows 7 by rejecting acceptance of the Windows 10 terms and conditions but then started getting this backup error.
I followed SuzanneK's excellent instructions (2 Sept 2015) and am backing up at this very moment.
