When trying to add a new Windows 7 machine to a network I get the following error message..."An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in the target domain." I don't have any problems adding XP machines to the domain and not sure why I can't add a Windows 7 machine. I am able to get on the internet on the Windows 7 PC but can't add it to the domain. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We finally got the computer to join the domain by doing the following: in the network adapter IP 4 properties, set the DNS ip address to that of the domain controller, NOT the DNS. Then went back to the computer properties to add the computer to the domain, it was added succesfully. After rebooting the machine and logging into the domain account, go back to the IP 4 properties and reset the DNS to automatically get the ip address.
All that headache and all I had to do was set static ip prior to adding to the domain. lol. Thank you very much for this. To anyone else having this problem, this IS the answer you've been looking for.
I have tried all of the suggestions listed here and I still can't get a Win 7 computer to connect to the domain hosted on a Windows 2003 server. I get the message "DNS name does not exist" and error code 0x0000232B Rcode_name_error. Any help on this would deeply appreciated!
I had this issue and it was resolved by using the local dns server in the dns setting for IP V4
We have a Windows 2008 Standard Server as the domain controller. We are unable to join a Win7 PC to the domain. We have tried setting the Win7 workstation's ip address to the DC to no avail. We have also tried using open DNS servers to no avail. We can map to resources on the DC and use them, but are unable to join the domain. Same result with the wizard. With Windows/XP and all settings set to "automatically detect...." there was no problem whatsoever. The XP machines are in the domain and have internet access. That is not the case with Win7. Why does it have to be like this? We are setting up a client with a domain and I am ready to downgrade the Win7 machines to Win/XP. regards/DCS
