When trying to add a new Windows 7 machine to a network I get the following error message..."An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in the target domain." I don't have any problems adding XP machines to the domain and not sure why I can't add a Windows 7 machine. I am able to get on the internet on the Windows 7 PC but can't add it to the domain. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We finally got the computer to join the domain by doing the following: in the network adapter IP 4 properties, set the DNS ip address to that of the domain controller, NOT the DNS. Then went back to the computer properties to add the computer to the domain, it was added succesfully. After rebooting the machine and logging into the domain account, go back to the IP 4 properties and reset the DNS to automatically get the ip address.
I tried all the steps still it doesn't work.
i had trouble connecting a client to domain earlier, but once i manually assign the ip address of the DC to client it just work fine. But not this time. Does anyone else has any other suggestion.
I was able to resolve this problem on a machine with Windows 2011 SBS by setting up a Forward Lookup Zone.
Almost everything in this thread was done before without success and even uninstalling and re-installing the DNS server role didn't work.
You can blame the new setup Wizard for DNS, which doesn't ask to setup a Forward Lookup Zone anymore.
It did ask for this in earlier versions of Windows Server (like Server 2000).
Very annoying and a lot of waste of time if you ask me.

Had the same problem with a SBS2008 Server.. XP machines connected without issue.. WIN7 Failed with error listed..
Was able to resolve by changing "Interfaces" on DNS server. Check box for "Only the following IP address" was checked and the IP address was not checked. Checked IP address and rejoinded with out issue.
