Why can't PSD thumbnails be displayed in Windows 7?

I use Windows 7's File Explorer to upload or open graphics files in other apps. Thumbnails are very handy in seeing at a glance that I have the right picture. PNG,JPG,and even PDF thumbs are supported,but not PSD. I have to rely on a third party solution. A programmer from Adobe has answered that Microsoft has the PSD documentation and this implies that the ball is in their court. I hope a Microsoft tech can pass this concern on or give me a reason why it can't happen at least in Windows 7.

PSD is as common as PDF and it has been around as long. The reason psicon.dll was dropped was over "file locking" issues with Windows.

I"pestered" Adobe,this is the answer I got:

Apple has been able to add support for PSDs in Quick Look without relying on Adobe, and MSFT has the PSD format documentation. That's not to say we shouldn't step up, too. We just haven't been able to find time yet.

I had hoped MSFT would have given some sort of direct statement on this issue,which is why I asked. Something other than the third party solutions have been given. Perhaps this is not the forum to bring this up.

I really won't say anything more about this. I think I have gone as far as I can.

psicon.dll for the free fix,Ardfrey if you can spare the $20.

I too was wondering why I couldn't see psd thumbnails in explorer like I did with Windows XP. I have Photoshop CS3 on my XP machine and Photoshop CS3 on my Windows 7 Pro 64bit. The same program on two different operating systems so how is it Adobe's fault that I can't see thumbnails on Win 7? I installed from the same disc so what ever is in all the Photoshop folders and files in Windows XP should be on my Windows 7 computer, right? It's not like I got a new computer, new operating system then the newest Adobe Photoshop, it's the same darn thing, the only difference is the operating system. I haven't seen this discussed in this thread. Am I wrong? Forgot, I looked in my Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe but I don't have a "Shell" folder to put a psicon.dll in. I do have it on the Windows XP computer. Why is that? Can I create a new folder named "Shell" and put the psicon.dll in it? Would that work? I will see, I will copy the files from my XP machine and see what happens. Probably nothing, I'll be back....

exactly nail on the head there golfnut :) ,, why is it that this advanced version of windows ...(sic) cannot do what a 1980's version of windows did just fine?? that is show thumbnails of psd files,,are we all wrong MS? or are you just provoking us to rant at you and your OS ? i wonder sometimes i really do...

release a hotfix to enable this now MS! noWWWWWWW! if it worked fine in win xp, then so it should in win7 no two ways about it,,but then lets see , what else on win 7 is erm improved??

1.cant customise command bar/folder bar,, as used to in win xp, now its locked and completely useless ,,,nice one ms
1. windows backup,,,omg,,,do you notice from these forums how often that fails to impress? truly you dont pay no attention it seems, judging from the number of complaints regarding it
3.remote sw (ie, security risks to any average pc user) enabled and installed by default? why?

remove remote registry,remote desktop ,and remote assistance,terminal services , and let those who need them,install them as optionals?

anyway maybe windows 8 eh...but i doubt it,, more likely more of this jump throu the hoops to find a solution thang coming :|
