blue screen and stop error 0x00000024 on startup windows XP

i am running a dell 4700 on windows XP. yesterday it shut down unexpectedly and now on starting up the loading screen appears but then i get a blue screen displaying stop: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x86FCE488, 0xc0000102, 0x00000000)

i have tried every start up mode in the F8 and F12 menus, but everything will take me back to this screen, it tells me to do disk deframentation, or check hard drive configuration, but i am clueless as to how to do this from this blue screen that every avenue leads to.

hopefully there is some way of rescuing my PC...

Hello lauriAM

You will need an XP Installation CD to try to fix this.  If you do not have one, try to borrow one just to run this fix.

Configure your PC to boot from CD if it isn't already set up that way. You may need to enter the BIOS to configure the PC to boot from the CD.

Set the boot order to

floppy (if present)

CD/DVDROM

Hard disk

SAVE and EXIT

Start your PC with the XP Setup CD in the drive. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD..." prompt, do so and let the CD-based boot process begin.

When the Recovery Console option is offered (Press R to start the Recovery Console), do so. You may be asked which Windows installation to enter, in which case type the number of the Windows installation you wish to work on (usually 1).

When prompted, enter the Administrator's password for that Windows installation. If you did not set a password just press ENTER

At the command prompt, type

chkdsk /r (there is a space before the /)

Enter

    Go into the BIOS and make sure the drive is recognised there.

    Hi cybertek,

    Same problem here, i am using a compaq presario v-5000, my blue screen error msg is '*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0x F78E5528, 0X C0000034, 0X 00000000, 0X 00000000) ' none of the F8 boot menu will work and it wont go into safemode either, wen i try to boot from my windows xp Home cd, and press R 'repair or 'Enter' to install the window this appears " Setup didnot find any Hard disk drives installed on your computer, whereas my hard disk is okay, i can run the system recovery disk and i know everything will b okay but i'll loose all my data on the drive, is there any way to detect my hard disk in current status and repair my XP home so that i dont loose any data and may not get into backingup data first.??? This happened after i changed the CMOS of my laptop and its the second time same thing happening after CMOS change.

    Try

    chkdsk**C: /f

    ( C is the drive where XP is installed)

    If that does not help can you slave the drive in another machine and copy off all your files.

    Also then check the drive in Disk Management?
