i have set my screen saver to bubbles, after approx an hour or so the bubbles on the screen are whizzing by very very fast. no other issues with screen saver. system recovers after mouse wiggle or key press. havent tried any other saver.
dx up to date, vid drivers up to date
running W7 64 bit
duel vid cards gtx275 sli
duel monitors

I did some 2min research and found this site Here . This "mod" doesnt really change the settings for the speed but it does allow you to tweak some other stuff for the bubbles screensaver. Just have a mess with some of the settings and see how things go from there. Sorry if this sounds vague but its all i can think up of right now - better than nothing i guess. M$ really does need to fix this, theyve nothing for ages now :(
Wow...so this has been going on for what....like three years now???....obviously Microsoft doesn't give a feck.
These same bullet bubbles occur after a few hours on WINDOWS 8 too.
I'm using an HP desktop, brand new, with windows 8 installed.
It's the end of June now and from what I hear Windows 8 will have some kind of major update in July but for some reason I really don't think that this Bubbles screensaver will be included in the 'fixes' that are supposed to occur.
No go on Medium setting either. I woke up this morning and it was still buggy, so it doesn't look like Ian's download is going to be a fix.
Time to hunt for a new screen saver!
I've had this same problem for awhile now. I really like the screensaver but it's annoying that, every few hours, I'm always having to jiggle the mouse to stop the bubbles from behaving like they're on speed.
Ian, I downloaded the hta file and set it up (fun, thanks!).
So far I've replicated the error on the "small" setting. My screen was covered with a rainbow of bubbles and, while I was watching (so over the course of about 5 minutes), it suddenly looked like a tornado had touched down. Purely conjecture here, but since it happened so fast this time, maybe the issue has something to do with the quanitity of bubbles? More activity = more of the issue? Meh. I'll give it a go on the "medium" setting and keep my fingers crossed.
In the meantime, if anyone else has found a fix for this, please share?

I recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite P785 Series lap top with 17.3" TruBrite LCD display, I5 core, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit system.
I also, almost 3 years since the original post, have the same exact problem.
My wife also recently purchased an HP lap top with 15.6-inch diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit display (1366x768), Intel Core i3-2350M. Her bubbles do not have this issue.
One thing I have noticed, it seems that most problems are occuring when the screens are larger than 15.6". Wondering if this has anything to do with the problem.
Obviously this issue is wide spread and has been an issue for a long time. I am very disappointed in Microsoft (M$). There should be a patch/fix for this by now.
