4 GB SDHC card not opening in XP with SP3 loaded

I have a built in card reader that has always run my SD cards fine - but now it is balky when I try to read a PNY 4GB SDHC card.  I think it read it at one time but not recently.  I have tried to download the hotfixes I found in the knowledge base but 2 of them are apparently older than SP3 and the 3rd doesn't have an English language selection.  In Device Manager, the system says the device is working properly.  I have tried to update the driver but am told there is not a newer driver - I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the driver and that doesn't help either.  Anybody have any other ideas or help??  I am using Windows XP Media Center edition with SP3 loaded in a Gateway desktop computer.

If this is any help - this card also does not open if I connect an external 2.0 USB card reader to this desktop - but this card works fine in my ACER netbook and in my Toshiba Satellite notebook - both running Windows XP.

Everyone!!!

You need to note that both the SD and SDHC "cards" have the exact same physical size but the internal electronics are different.   To read a SDHC card, the reader MUST be able to read the SDHC electronics correctly.  You can not read a SDHC card on a standard SD reader but a SDHC reader can read a SD card.

I have 3 HP NC laptops here. This is my experience.

    First three important checks:

    1. Do you have Win XP SP3 installed?
    2. Does your cardreader support High Capacity (SDHC) SD cards?
    3. Check control panel -> system-> hardware -> device manager. Look for PCMCIA and flash memory devices  -> Texas Instruments PCIxx12 Integrated FlashMedia Controller. Doubleclick on it en choose 'Driver'. This should be version 2.0.0.8 or later.

If you do not have WinXP SP3 installed -> please upgrade. The hotfixes that are mentioned earlier are part of SP3.

If you do not have the TI PCIxx12 controller then you should look for the newest driver for your particular Flash Memomy device and install it.

If you have the right controller then first uninstall the 'Texas Instruments PCIxx12 Integrated FlashMedia Controller'  from Device Manager, then download the right driver (google for HP sp43509) and install it.

    Sidenotes:

    • I also used this sp43509 for the TI PCI21 controller on our old HPnc4200 and it worked great: now i can read both SD and SDHC cards.
    • The driver version 2.0.0.6 does not support 4GB SDHC cards. The 2.0.0.7 version does, but crashes on my 1GB cards. 2.0.0.8 and 2.0.0.9 worked great.
    • In the Device Manager you will also find a (Ricoh) Secure Digital host controllers  -> SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller 6.0.4069.5 (1-10-2002). You don't need this (Even after uninstalling it I could read my SD cards), but you can leave this as it is.

Same problem, but a little different.  I tried the 2 hot fixes...kb 934428 and kb 934429.

I guess you meant kb 923293 instead of kb 934429 (the last is an "Allow hybrid sleep" hotfix for Vista)

Try INITIALIZING it first, then format it, from the the "Disk Management" section of the Administrators Tools. These 'removable devices' are NOT made 'read-to-go', never wiil be, That's why people have so much trouble with them, thinking that they CAN use them....straight of the box.
