Music flickers/crackles in Windows Media Player when browsing the Internet

HI - I just got a new PC with Windows 7.  It's an HP Pavillion Slimline with 3GB Memory and an Intel duo core processor.  I'm finding that when I play MP3s or WMAs via Windows Media Player that the sound crackles (sounds like static) when I browse the Internet using IE8.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated on how to fix this annoying issue.

    If you can post the hardware ID and driver version of the NIC's you've tried, we can look into it.

    I'd be happy to. Is there a way to find the hardware ID and driver version of the NIC's without reinstalling each one again? Perhaps it's in a log file somewhere? I think I tried about 6 nics before the current Realtek RTL819/810x (which is still showing very low DPC latency after a couple of hours of running - very promising!!!)

    Hymm difference based on NIC used.

    wonder if that has to do with some NICs offloading more work to your CPU than others.

    I noticed on a couple of Newegg reviews that the northbrige heatsink was found to be very hot to the touch.

    Not good to have your I/O controller running a fever.

    Could be an avenue to explore.

    Possible bad factory assembly of the heatsink/themal compound used.

    Or

    An undersized northbridge heatsink.

    Hi Darryl,

    Yes, long DPC's can cause audio glitching. These are often driver issues. It sounds like you have already verified you have the latest driver versions installed.

    If you can post the hardware ID and driver version of the NIC's you've tried, we can look into it.

    I have tried disabling the GT216, in fact I removed it completely, with no affect on the problem. I'm cycling through different NICs, and I'm finding there's a huge range of difference in the noise and DPC latency spikes. Some show red spikes right after system start, and others don't show spikes until the system is running for a while. I just plugged in a Realtek RTL819/810x and it's showing very good results so far, but I won't know until after a few hours or even a day if it's going to resolve the issue.

    Really, it seems to suggest that Windows 7 is very fragile with respect to audio. You better have all your eggs lined up in a perfect row, or you're going to end up with an omelet.
