I cannot download pictures from my iphone to my PC. The PC recognizes itunes and syncs with the iphone. However, the pc does not recognize the iphone as an external device (i.e. camera).  Therefore, I do not see the iphone under the computer as a device options. Also, I checked the settings on autoload and they are correct, however the PC still does not recognize nor does it autoload the Iphone. I spoke with apple tech support and they said it is not a problem with the iphone but instead it is a problem with Microsoft. can you please help me?

Hi Byron R.

Thank you for using Microsoft Answers Forums!

1.       Were you able to download pictures from Iphone earlier?

2.       Any recent changes made on your computer?

3.       Are you getting any error while downloading pictures?

You may try this method.

If you click start and within the start search type auto play you then should see auto play populate under programs select auto play.

Once in Auto play scroll down to Devices and see if you see your Iphone within devices click the drop down box and set to import pictures using windows then click ok then plug you Iphone and see if it lets you import.

Also if you want it to ask you what action you want to take whenever you plug in your Iphone just select "ask me every time" from the Auto play.

The Iphone will not transfer photos to your computer if the device is locked and you are using a pass code. If you want to transfer photos, simply unlock (Slide to unlock and enter pass code) your device to transfer photos.

Note: Plug the Iphone to your computer in unlocked mode.

For more information on importing pictures refer  to this link:

I have read this whole thread (and several others like it all over the net) and NOTHING works for me.

I have an iPhone 4 and I'm running Vista with all the current patches installed.  Vista does not detect my iPhone at all.  When I open iTunes though, it tries to install the drivers but it always gives me a message that the installation has failed. However iTunes "sees" my iphone just fine and I can sync it.

But I can't see my phone in My Computer.  I do not have any pictures that were NOT taken with my phone. My phone is unlocked when I plug it in to the laptop.  Originally I could see it as a portable device under Device Manager/Portable Devices but it was listed as a digital camera, not an iPhone and the icon indicated that  there was a problem. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers from my computer pointing to the path where supposedly the Apple Drivers are listed, but Vista kept on telling me that I already had the latest drivers.  Eventually I removed the corresponding drivers from the "Portable Devices" and the "USB Controllers" sections and rebooted my computer, as it was suggested on another forum.  The thought was that I would then be able to plug in my phone and Vista would reinstall the drivers.  That didn't work and for a time iTunes wouldn't even "see" my iPhone anymore until that started working fine again.

I don't know what else to do!  I have 144 photos and videos on my phone and emailing them would be a PITA. I'll try the transferring software that someone has mentioned in this thread but since nothing else has worked for me so far, I'm a little skeptical.

If anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know :)  Thanks!

(on a side note, Vista has never been able to detect my Sony MP3 player nor my digital camera either, I have had to use my Sony MP3 player on another PC that runs XP and for the digital camera I've just been using a memory card reader to transfer photos from a memory card to my hard drive.  So in my opinion, this is definitely a VISTA problem, not an Apple or a Sony or a Kodak or a Cannon problem. I wanted to upgrade to Windows 7 but since I'm reading that Windows 7 users seem to have problems too, I'm thinking about saving my money and switching to a Mac when this laptop finally dies.)

The bit about unlocking the iphone before pluging it into your computer should be the first thing mentioned. itunes remembers the iphone unlock once you have used it which means when you connect the iphone itunes recognises it but windows doesn't if you don't unlock it first causing confusion to the user.
