Mouse Pointer is getting messed up

Hi,

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and have nothing fancy -- regular wired mouse, keyboard, etc.

Every once in a while, my mouse pointer gets messed up i.e. turns into a strange looking line/bar. This seems to happen when I have a few applications running but couldn't tell you if a particular application seems to be causing the issue.

Any idea how I can prevent this issue?

A Quick fix has been found, does not prevent the problem from reoccurring though, go to control panel-> Hardware -> mouse -> pointer options and set Pointer Trails to yes.

Hi Imsam67,

Welcome to Microsoft answers.

This might be an issue related with the drivers for the mouse after installing Windows 7; you may try updating the drivers for the mouse from the Device Manager and check.

·         Are you using Desktop computer or Laptop?

1.         Click Start.

2.         Type Device Manager in Start search.

3.         Expand Mice and other Pointing devices in device manager window.

4.         Right Properties.

5.         Click on driver tab.

6.         Click Update drivers.

7.          Click OK.

Check if any exclamation marks are shown with the device. The exclamation mark shows an issue with the driver installed.

I also suggest that you manually download the drivers from the manufacturer’s website and try installing the same on the computer and check.

You may also try connecting mouse to different port and check, this is to narrow down the issue if the issue is with mouse or with ports. You may also try connecting different mouse to the computer and try connecting this mouse to different computer and check.

    I just wanted to state that I am having the same very annoying problem and I am hopeful someone will find a permanent fix.

    I can also report that I tried turning on the mouse trails with a slight trail and yes, that did solve the problem for me but who wants mouse trails?  I must say however, it is much better than the black glob you get.

    Also, I did try the answer above which stated "As for the issue, its usually when you have been typing and moved out of the text box. Just enter a textbox again, and flick between monitors rapidly and the glitch goes."  Although this did work for me, it only worked about 50% of the time.

    Not as good an answer as the mouse trails.

    DeepStrike, i couldn't help but wonder, you are a 3D artist yet you are using a gaming graphics card? If i was doing 3D art and wanted an ATI card, i would have gone for a FireGL.

    As for the issue, its usually when you have been typing and moved out of the text box. Just enter a textbox again, and flick between monitors rapidly and the glitch goes.

    This ATI 5750 card is such a piece of junk!!!  I'm not a gamer, I'm a 3d artist, and there are so many glitches with this card its ridiculous.  I just installed the latest driver today in hopes that it would fix the mouse cursor problem.  It did not.  This is the first time I've had an ATI card in, well, maybe forever!  I'm switching back to Nvidia.

    It could be a bad unit. Other than this problem, which started last evening, I haven't had any problems with my 5750. I'm curious, who manufactured your card? I have an XFX.
