Programs Files vs Program files (x86)

What is the difference between the "Program Files" folder & the "Program Files (x86)" folder, in C Drive? Various programs seem split almost equally between the 2, after I upgraded from Vista to 7, except that Internet Explorer is in both, meaning that when I "Open with" for a text file I get IE listed twice.

Can I move everything to one or other of these & delete the other one? Is one for 64-bit and one for 32-bit programs or something like that?

Hi Milton,

Yes, the two ‘Program File’ folders that are listed are for 32 bit and 64 bit version of Windows 7. The folder with (x86) is for 32 bit version.

    u can switch all features to one folder through regedit, switch everything from program  files to program files (86), some applications need to be manually set from the new location, but everything still works, ur basically bypassing the windows system, also once everything is in one folder programs run quicker, because there not having to constantly load from different file locations, also the fix with E explorer is simple hard delete the file in program files, and leave the other alone, causes no issues. 

    Is the above true?

    Please answer the question.  Can we put the programs in a single folder?

    Where do we put programs?  Do we have to research whether it is 32 or 64 and then remember that x86 means one or the other .... with no logic?
