Programs Files vs Program files (x86)

What is the difference between the "Program Files" folder & the "Program Files (x86)" folder, in C Drive? Various programs seem split almost equally between the 2, after I upgraded from Vista to 7, except that Internet Explorer is in both, meaning that when I "Open with" for a text file I get IE listed twice.

Can I move everything to one or other of these & delete the other one? Is one for 64-bit and one for 32-bit programs or something like that?

Hi Milton,

Yes, the two ‘Program File’ folders that are listed are for 32 bit and 64 bit version of Windows 7. The folder with (x86) is for 32 bit version.

    I am installing a program which adds a button to an explorer bar in IE.  I have not been able to get this feature working.  I am wondering if this is because my IE is opening in the wrong version.  The details are:

    Running Windows 7 and IE8 and installing MasterCook 11 (also have the problem with MasterCook9).  All other features of the MasterCook work except for the Web Import Bar.  The directions are to load the software, open IE, open View on the menu bar, open Explorer Bars.  The Web Import is supposed to show in the Explorer Bars.  It doesn't. 

    Can you help?

    I will have to do some checking on my own, but when My Google Toolbar is updated does it update both 64-bit and 32-bit?

    Another way to ask this is: I have a Google Toolbar in my 64-bit browser.  Is that a problem?

    No.

    Yes. In 64-bit Windows, you can run 64-bit programs (IE or others) and

    32-bit programs simultaneously.

    I see. Thankyou. 1 last question then... if I'm running 64-bit IE and these 32-bit only programs are out there, will i have to close and open the 32-bit version of IE, or do they both work together?

    I have a 64-bit machine and have both IE8 versions, but don't run it in 64-bit becuase of flash.  I did have to install Java in a special way because of having both, but it appears to update both automatically.  Prior to the installation of both versions of Java the information given was that it would automatically know which version to use.  I am guessing that would be based on which version of IE I started.  I ran the 64-bit IE8 maybe once.  But since I visit YouTube a lot I got the message that I needed to install flash.  And that was not available in 64-bit.  So I guess when that becomes available I'll be using the 32-bit mode most of the time.

    More specifically to reply to your latest question at this time it is possible to have 32 bit mode Windows Explorer and 64-bit mode Windows Explorer running at the same time.  And I just ran the 64-bit IE while finishing this message (that is being composed from the 32-bit IE).

    Some kind of destination has to be decided upon initially, but it is the journey that is of most importance really and perhaps this is why we have heard it said, "Good Journey!"
