Windows 7 has High CPU Usage and slow performance

Hello all,

I've searched the forums, but was unable to find anything relevant.  I recently upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista.  It was running fine for about a week then all of a sudden everything started running very slow.  I checked the the processes tab in task manager and I am constantly running at 70-80% CPU usage.  I think this is very high considering the computer is only a few months old.  It seems like others are having this problem as well, but no real solutions.

I have turned off file indexing as well as disabled the HD audio device. 

Please help!

Here are my hardware specs:

AMD 9550 Quad-Core

64-bit

6GB Ram

I think the answer might be the Windows Media Player and Windows Media Network Sharing Services as zxypher suggested.  The fix for that is to adjust were the Windows Media Player services search for media files. 

It seems to be a bad problem for me as well upgrading from Vista to Windows 7.  The default search location for media is set to C:\Users\ instead of down in the My Music folders.

Go into Media Player.  From the menu -> File -> Manage libraries -> select each library (music, video, pictures, recorded tv [if you have]) and check the paths that it is managing and make sure it is not too close to the root of the C: drive.  For example, it should be something like c:\users\Jim\Music and c:\users\Public\Music BUT NOT **** c:\users as they will cause the whole directory tree to be re-indexed over and over (when you surf the web or change any files in your profile).

If you have multiple users who login to the computer, you may need to repeat the process for each user if all users have added managed folders which are actively changing on a regular basis.

If this is your issue and you do it correctly, then the high CPU should drop in minutes (or seconds down to nothing).

This is the CORRECT way to adjust the WMNSS/WMPNetwk.exe process issues.

    Bon,

     If you have an ASUS motherboard (if a desktop) you can download latest drivers from thier websiste, but if it is a gigabyte board then you may have to pay for drivers. As fare as Skype goes download and save to a file, then run setup from the downloaded file, you may have to r/click and extract files to find setup.exe file. Skype is compatible for both 32 and 64 bit systems.

    yes, my sound card is a built in Realtek Audio. same here i have been using Mcafee for 6 years now and it has been very helpful specially on removing viruses.

    No, skype does not run on start up. and no audiodg.exe is not running when i am on skype. but this program does run (RtkNGUI64.exe - Realtek Audio). I have tried to update skype to the latest version but it just shows "initializing" the whole day.

    I have done what you said and my PC has been running normally without any issues (no Peek usage of CPU, memory etc). sadly, i need skype for work as all my colleagues contact me thru here.

    I have now selected to run on start-up just programs stated above.hopefully there would be a fix on this soon.

     It can be a lot of things, but I notiiced you said your using Skype, so you must be using your sound card? Is it a Realtek Card? I just upgraded to Norton Internet Security 2012, some people have no faith in it but when you use a product for 11 years and it does't fail you, and stops trojans and virus's. Yes it was bloatware, but not any more. Windows 7 System Restore has the potential to remove trojans as well. I use a selective startup so I have minimal startup programs, I opt for a shortcut on the desktop. So in reading most of the thread, it is all related around "sound" WMP, Skype, Yahoo Messenger etc. Overseeing these are your Operating System, and your Security Program. It is my Security (Norton's) that flags the issue whenever My CPU goes hyper, I use Brother printers and these have been said to be an issue. I go to the brother Website and get the latest drivers, and not long after that Windows downloads its own version? When you say you have no Programs running, just  open Tast Manager and view the process's running in the background. I saw a preview of Windows 8 and don't hold your breath for that as it is designed around tablet and touch screen, with apps all over the desktop but will run on a normal PC.

     Look at your processes and see if audiodg.exe is running while on skype? Does skype start up with windows or do you start it up ? Although you hav 8Gb of memory I would go into msconfig, and uncheck the obvious, like skype, messenger, etc. In theory all you need to startup is your Operating System, system files and your Security, but if unsure leave it.
