Windows 7 has High CPU Usage and slow performance

Hello all,

I've searched the forums, but was unable to find anything relevant.  I recently upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista.  It was running fine for about a week then all of a sudden everything started running very slow.  I checked the the processes tab in task manager and I am constantly running at 70-80% CPU usage.  I think this is very high considering the computer is only a few months old.  It seems like others are having this problem as well, but no real solutions.

I have turned off file indexing as well as disabled the HD audio device. 

Please help!

AMD 9550 Quad-Core

64-bit

6GB Ram

I think the answer might be the Windows Media Player and Windows Media Network Sharing Services as zxypher suggested.  The fix for that is to adjust were the Windows Media Player services search for media files. 

It seems to be a bad problem for me as well upgrading from Vista to Windows 7.  The default search location for media is set to C:\Users\ instead of down in the My Music folders.

Go into Media Player.  From the menu -> File -> Manage libraries -> select each library (music, video, pictures, recorded tv [if you have]) and check the paths that it is managing and make sure it is not too close to the root of the C: drive.  For example, it should be something like c:\users\Jim\Music and c:\users\Public\Music BUT NOT **** c:\users as they will cause the whole directory tree to be re-indexed over and over (when you surf the web or change any files in your profile).

If you have multiple users who login to the computer, you may need to repeat the process for each user if all users have added managed folders which are actively changing on a regular basis.

If this is your issue and you do it correctly, then the high CPU should drop in minutes (or seconds down to nothing).

This is the CORRECT way to adjust the WMNSS/WMPNetwk.exe process issues.

    Hi all,

    I have also run into a very similar issue. I am currently suffering from my cpu at constantly 30% usage due to System interrupt when idling.

    I have followed Andre's guide and figured out that there are two drivers (called 'Unknown' and 'hdaudbus.sys) that cause the problem. I am not sure about the 'Unknown' one but when I have disabled the High Definition Audio Controller (which uses the driver hdaudbus.sys) throught the device manager system interrupt drops to 0%.

    I have already made sure all the drivers are updated (especially the audio ones since my issue is obviously caused by the audio).

    my laptop is HP dv6-1264ca

    AMD Turion X2 64

    ATI Raedon HD 4650

    4 GB DDR2 Memory

    I have been google-ing about this issue for the pass few days and still got no solution. Hope for help and Thank you very much!

    Alright, I removed the HDD, checked the contacts, and put it back in; all contacts looked good.

    The screenshots of my device manager doesn't show it, but there are actually two Network Adapters:

    1. Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AG
    2. Realtek RTL8101E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20)

    The Realtek adapter always disappears immediately after the 50% cpu usage starts and the cpu usage doesn't start until the Realtek adapter disappears.  It's like clockwork.  Even if it doesn't disappear and the cpu usage goes up to 50%, I scan for hardware changes and it disappears.  IT HAS GOT TO BE THE CULPRIT.  One doesn't happen without the other.  I have been slowly going through every driver that has been made for this device since 2006 and seeing if they stop the problem.  None have yet.  Any ideas?

    As for the cables, do you mean disassemble my computer and check the cables inside or do you mean check the power cable?  If disassembly is required, could you recommend a good link that would walk me through disassembling my Pavilion DV6700? 

    I didn't see that you use a notebook. In this case open the laptop at the button and remove the HDD and insert the HDD again. Maybe the HDD has a defective contact.
