Although I am able to go through the "regular" process to associate a program with an extension it doesn't work. After going through the browse process and selecting the program it brings me back to the "open with" window. The program I've selected does not appear in the "open with" window and it appears that it is simply ignoring me.
I've also tried the "Default Programs" route but wind up at the same "open with" window that still ignores me.
Suggestions?

After playing around a lil I think I've figured it out.. [for me at least..]
The program that you're pointing to isn't registered correctly.
In regedit: Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applicationsand find your .exe name.
Navigate under its name to shell>open>command. In the Default change its location to the actual location of the executable, hit okay and then try and reassociate the file type as you normally would.
Let me know if that doesn't seem to work.
After reading through all of this, I decided to try Ccleaner registry cleaner. It found an issue with the file type that I could not reassociate. After it "fixed" the issue, I can now reassociate the file. Thanks to all for the ideas that led to a solution for me.
I realize this answer is going to be posted on page 23 or better but THANK YOU to Xandragnis for the answer that "Still works after all these years" on Windows 7.
In the on-going process of switching over to as many portable programs as possible. I despise wasting time uninstalling using deep uninstallers just to clean up registry remains from software that did not uninstall correctly.
In this case I was less than diligent uninstalling the installed version of XnView when switching to portable version. Could not get to show up on (other programs via associations) nor could I get it to 'stick' when selected after browsing to the exe. In the registry the filename was xnview.exe. I changed the path and the filename (xnviewportable.exe) and praise God, success!
