I do believe you are missing my point. I know how to manually make changes. I've needed to do it regularly for albums I know are not in the database. I also know how to do what you suggest to prevent WMP from going out any updating info. The underlying problem is the WMP screwy decisions by default.

Which brings us to the underlying problem. Why does WMP insist on matching up an unknown album with what truly looks like a random choice? Why must I flip off the default actions to prevent WMP from overwriting manual edits made after the fact? I'd suggest WMP should flag manual edits and leave them be by default.

I used the David Gilmour CD as an example because I know it's not in the database, at least yet, and maybe never. It's a free CD that came with a magazine. I've had exactly the same problem with my own CDs, my own music, my own personal burned CDs. None of them are in the database, yet occasionally WMP will decide they are in the database and pull in some random info and art. Usually WMP will use "Unknown Artist" and go with it. I'm OK with that. It's actually correct.

Think of it this way. We CAN manually change the artist, song titles, art, and all that after a file is ripped, and we CAN change the defaults to WMP doesn't screw with out changes. Yet, the initial rip is still screwed. How?

No amount of manually editing of the info will fix the physical file location and filenames of these files. We will need to go do that for every file ripped, and then we'll need to get them moved over into the appropriately named folder, and if we are lucky WMP won't try to update the info displayed in WMP again.

This is just a bad experience, when it happen.

If you use the settings shown in my Dec 6 post CD info will still appear, but it limits WMP from making changes.

Regarding your Gilmour album - you should be able to make the changes... I just tried this out myself (I haven't needed to do it for a while...) using a CD that was nothing to do with David G and the info held (as in the snip below) - not necessarily all the right info - just for e.g. purposes! - so it may be you are not using the best method. Get back if you'd like some pointers. - Ric.

I just tried to rip David Gilmour & Friends, on MOJO. It's a compilation. The problem is that WMP retrieves information for Crosseyed Heart by Keith Richards.

Searching for this David Gilmour album turns up nothing. It's not listed.

Manually editing the tracks doesn't stick, and while I can disable searching (as has been pointed out) doing so will also disable finding info for other albums. I'd rather not lose that functionality unless it gets unusable for most other albums as well.

So...WHY Keith Richards?  Did the folks that put these out use the same UPC code? It was my understanding that song count and track length are used to determine which album was with. If that is true then am I to believe that this David Gilmour CD and the Keith Richards CD have exactly the same number of songs and each one just happens to be the exact same length and in the same order?  While this is possible for rereleases and box set CDs I can't imagine that being the case here.

Also, I can delete the database and have to rebuild. Won't this pull down all the wrong info again, including all those albums I have manually fixed (assuming they haven't been already corrupted)?

On more thing. WMP rips to folders named for the artists and album titles. Manually changing info does nothing to move the files to the correct folders.
