Windows Vista- Can't turn on Windows Defender

I TRIED TO TURN ON WINDOW DEFENDER. IT GAVE AN ERROR 0X800705B4.

WHAT DO I DO NOW?

Hi tropicalvic,

Let’s follow these steps which should fix the issue.

Step 1

If you have any third party antivirus software and firewall disable them temporarily and make sure that the Windows Firewall is turned on. Then check if the issue reappears.

Step 2

  1. Open Run, and  type in services.msc then press Enter.
  2. In services window, locate Windows Defender service in the services list.
  3. Verify that the Status is Started. If the Status column is blank,

right click on the service and select Start.

4 If you get error trying to force start the Windows Defender service, try to change the Startup Type to Automatic, and then restart the computer.

    After having the same problem and fixing it as described in my earlier posting I have since reset my laptop to factory settings for other reasons. I did not have a repeat of the problem! So it may be related to your initial setup choices/options - just a thought, good luck

    I am also facing the same problem, but even after following above description I found the WinDefender is running but cannot turn on the real-time protection. What to do? I am using win8.1

    I had to go (in Defender on win8) and select the tab "Settings". Then (from menu on left column) "Real-time protection". Then in panel on the right un-check (turn off) "Turn on real-time protection". Then when the bubble "at risk" popped up from the task bar. In Defender, I clicked on the big red "Turn On" button. It then it turned from red to green (trim & background) and the "PC status" now says "Protected". Hmmmm.....
