Hi tropicalvic,

Let’s follow these steps which should fix the issue.

Step 1

If you have any third party antivirus software and firewall disable them temporarily and make sure that the Windows Firewall is turned on. Then check if the issue reappears.

Step 2

  1. Open Run, and  type in services.msc then press Enter.
  2. In services window, locate Windows Defender service in the services list.
  3. Verify that the Status is Started. If the Status column is blank,

right click on the service and select Start.

4 If you get error trying to force start the Windows Defender service, try to change the Startup Type to Automatic, and then restart the computer.

Hope the information helps. Please post back and let us know.

Regards

Just got new desktop with Windows 8 and pre-installed McAfee. Uninstalled the latter becasue prefer (free) Defender then got exactly the same symptoms as you and error code: 0x800705b4 BUT earlier in the day I had disallowed remote access (for safety reasons). By chance I found this is required for Defender. Once I restored this AND restarted computer all is fine. So: Control Panel - System & security - System - Allow remote access then restart. Good luck whoever ends up reading this and finds it helps, because until I found this simple fix, the problem was really getting me down!

    Window Key + R

    type Services.msc

    hit enter

    find Windows Defender Service

    click restart
