No Audio from HDMI output

After trying every configuration combination listed here in every permutation under the sun, my resolution was to "*** Roll Back the NVIDIA Device Drriver***"

At some point, I had accepted a general Microsoft NVIDIA device driver update. That was my mistake. Make sure you have the driver that was created for your computer model.

My Laptop is an HP DV9000 running Vista SP2

I was able to go to the Control Panel -> Device Manager -> Dispaly -> NVIDA -> Driver and select "rollback".

That solved it for me.

Make sure you set up a Restore point first, just in case this is not your solution.

I had the same problem.  Excellent video quality with a Dell XPS laptop, but no audio via the HDMI connection.

I followed Jonathan's instructions on getting to the Manage Audio Devices window.  At this point the fix that worked for me was to make the HDMI output the "default" one.  (Jonathan says to click on it, but you really have to right-click and select "set as default")  This is what makes the green checkmark move to the HDMI setting.  After that, the audio came though wonderfully.

Thank you for posting to the Microsoft Answers Community Forum.

By default Vista does not route sound over the HDMI output.  To change this we need to change the settings in control panel. 

Note:  This will turn off sound from the speakers or normal audio output on the laptop.  To get that back you will have to reverse this process.

 - Click on the "Start" button

 - Click on "Control Panel"

 - With the Control Panel in "Control Panel Home" view please click on "Hardware and Sound"

 - Where it says "Sound" in green letters there are three options below that are in blue click on "Manage Audio Devices"

 - This will bring up a window labeled "Sound"

 - On the "Playback" tab there is listed the sound options available to you. One should read "Digital Output Device (HDMI)" Click on that.

 - There should now be a check mark on that option.

 - The Sound should then play through your HDMI hookups to the TV.

Hi all

Try going to the manage audio devices window in control panel (or rightclick on sound icon in system tray) and on a blank bit of the window right click and check the box which comes up saying show disabled devices. The HDMI option should then appear and all you have to do is enable it.

Do you have the HDMI hook up at the time you checked "Sound" settings like Jonathan asked?  If not, hook it up to your tv again and redo the steps Johnathan suggested. 

Also take note of what's available when the HDMI is plugged in.

I had a similar problem with no sound over HDMI with a new Acer Aspire 7740.   I'm posting this here in hopes that it may help others.

My setup is an Acer Aspre 7740-5691 with Windows 7 Premium 64-bit.  I connected the HDMI port up to my LG HD set and while I saw the video but there was no audio other than through the laptop speakers.  If I look in Control Panel / Device Manager / Sound, video and game controllers I see two drivers:

Intel(R) Display Audio (v6.12.0.3037)

Realtek High Definition Audio (v6.0.1.5969)

If I right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray (lower right corner of the screen) and select Playback Devices I see two devices:

Speakers  ( Realtek High Definition Audio ) default device

Reaktek Digital Output  ( Realtek High Definition Audio )

Even if right-clicked in that screen and selected Show Disabled Devices I still only saw those two devices.   I right-clicked on Realtek Digital Outpout and chose Set as Default Device, hooked up the laptop to the HDTV and still no sound.  Then while the laptop was still connected to the HDTV I right-clicked on the speaker icon again and chose Playback Devices and now there was a 3rd device:

42PC1DA-UB (Intel Display Audio)

My HDTV is an LG 42PC1DA.  I right-clicked on that device, chose Set as Default Device and lo-and-behold I now had audio over the HDMI port!   When I disconnected the HDMI cable that Playback Device disappeared.

So it appears Windos 7 and the Intel Display Audio driver are dynamically creating the playback device as needed.   I'm just glad I happened to look at the playback devices while it was connected or I never would have solved my problem.

I finally got it to work!  I already had the cloning feature set, so my screen was showing on the LCD TV, but we could not get sound!  I followed the instructions below to go into the Sound window and change to the HDMI and set it as default.  But the only way it worked was to "disable " my regular speakers in the Sound window.  Voila!  Thank you, hys436!  I now have sound from my desktop to my LCD.  We were SO frustrated that we couldn't get sound on our new LCD with our streaming Netflix.  Sooooo happy to have it working.  Thank you, ALL!!
