original title: Windows Update still giving error Code 8024402F Windows Update encountered an unknown error even after fresh install (Win7 Professional x32 and x64)

Hi,

I recently installed Windows 7 (fresh install). Prior to that, I was using Windows Vista and everything was working OK.

I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro x32 bit (using the download version), installed various softwares and everytime I tried updating through Windows update, I get the error Windows could not seach for new updates: An error occured while checking for new updates for your computer. Error(s) found: Code 8024402F Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I clicked on "Get help with this error" and used the "Windows Update troubleshooter" but it could not find the error.

A week later, the problem still persisted and decided to redownload the entire windows 7 but this time downloading the ISO version and installing the x64 one. As soon as it completed installing (no other software installed even antiviruses), I immediately tried running Windows Update. I got the same error message. Tried doing the "Windows Update troubleshooter" to no avail.

This might also be related. In both installations, I also tried to set up Windows Media Center. When it tried to install PlayReady, it gave me the error: An error encountered while downloading the installation package (Error code: 0x80240022). When I ignore that, the next phase (downloading TV setup data) stops with a one tiny dot in the progress bar-- even after half an hour.

Again, I used to use Windows Vista and it updated fine without any issues. In my Windows 7 installation, I am able to connect to the network, surf the internet, download files, and use various software (e.g., Yahoo Messenger, Skype, Kaspersky Antivirus which updates fine).

Thank you for your information.

Actually I was about to advise of a work around that worked for me, all that was necessary was to turn off the Windows Firewall.

Of course this is not a final solution as it is obviously not a good idea to turn off the firewall while downloading, also after I turn it back on I assume Automatic Updates will again be blocked. A message to the effect that Automatic Updates were being blocked was what first drew my attention to the problem.

I would suggest that someone on this forum who is in contact with the appropriate Microsoft group should pass on this information for a correction to be organised. Now that I can download Updates I should be able to install it.  :-)

    Hi John,

    Your solution to tun off updates worked for me.

    Windows 7,  32 bit.

    My PC is now downloading 94 updates!

    Finally, finally, finally:

    Just on the off-chance, having uninstalled Net Framework 4 as my last vain attempt I came back later (because I *do* have a life) and installed Net Framework 4.5.

    Now Windows Update suddenly works and is downloading 128 updates, 639 Mbytes in all.

    So the answer is, Microsoft think they are gods, which in terms of market-share they are, and we are all their servants, which, unless we go Mac or Linux/Ubuntu unfortunately *we are*, not by choice but by undeserved monopoly

    so.....

    Microsoft don't feel it necessary to tell us that they ****ed up and that they have fixed it in 4.5, because they are Gods and we are just punters.

    This issue can be caused by the following factors:

    1. The Windows Update service has been stopped.
    2. Corrupted Windows Update Temporary folder.

    In order to narrow down the cause of this issue and resolve it, please refer to the following steps. After finishing each step, please check the result again on the Windows Update website.

    NOTE: Some third party programs can affect the Windows Update service. If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing Windows Update later. Please understand that we are disabling these programs only for the purpose of troubleshooting and we can re-enable these programs after we finish troubleshooting.

    Step 1: Verify the relevant Windows Update services

    =======================================

    1. Click the Start Button, in Start Search box, type: "services.msc" (without quotes) and press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    2. Double click the service "Windows Update".
    3. Click on the "General" tab; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic" or "Manual". Then please click the "Start" button under "Service Status" to start the service.
    4. Please repeat the above steps with the "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" service.

    You need to temporarily stop these services.

    Step 2: Rename the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder

    ================================================

    This problem may occur if the Windows Update Software distribution folder has been corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please note that the folder will be re-created the next time we visit the Windows Update site.

    1. Close all the open windows.
    2. Click the Start Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
    3. Right-click on "Command Prompt” and click "Run as administrator".
    4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press Enter.

    Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully stopped before we try to rename the folder. However, if it fails, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed.

    1. Click the Start Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in "%windir%" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
    2. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".
    3. Right-click on the folder, select Rename and type "SoftwareDistribution.old" (without the quotes) to rename this folder.
    4. While still in the "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command "net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the Windows Updates service.

    Note: Please look at the cmd window and make sure it says that it was successfully started. However, if it failed, please let me know before performing any further steps and include any error messages you may have received when it failed.

     

    For the Windows Media Center issue you can try the following step:

    I have tried everything up to page 4 0f 8 with this problem I had the problem with Vista, I have just bought and freshly installed Windows 7. I have tried all of the above that Uma R suggested. I have tried Firewall off, uninstalling Net Framework 4, with Update in every setting state, I have tried the re-setting the clock thing, everything suggested on all 4 pages so far apart from the Active X fiddling with my router because the firmware site had no listing for it, so I couldn't try it.

    So Microsoft Support people, what's going On?

    I too had gone through all the suggested fixes in this thread with no success.

    The only thing that would work was uninstalling .NET 4.0 and then the updates would work.

    This wasn't a suitable fix as we have company specific applications that rely on .NET 4.0.

    I ended up installing .NET 4.0 again, which broke Windows Update, but in addition i installed .NET 4.5 - Windows Update now works again as it should!
