original title: Windows Update still giving error Code 8024402F Windows Update encountered an unknown error even after fresh install (Win7 Professional x32 and x64)

Hi,

I recently installed Windows 7 (fresh install). Prior to that, I was using Windows Vista and everything was working OK.

I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro x32 bit (using the download version), installed various softwares and everytime I tried updating through Windows update, I get the error Windows could not seach for new updates: An error occured while checking for new updates for your computer. Error(s) found: Code 8024402F Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

I clicked on "Get help with this error" and used the "Windows Update troubleshooter" but it could not find the error.

A week later, the problem still persisted and decided to redownload the entire windows 7 but this time downloading the ISO version and installing the x64 one. As soon as it completed installing (no other software installed even antiviruses), I immediately tried running Windows Update. I got the same error message. Tried doing the "Windows Update troubleshooter" to no avail.

This might also be related. In both installations, I also tried to set up Windows Media Center. When it tried to install PlayReady, it gave me the error: An error encountered while downloading the installation package (Error code: 0x80240022). When I ignore that, the next phase (downloading TV setup data) stops with a one tiny dot in the progress bar-- even after half an hour.

Again, I used to use Windows Vista and it updated fine without any issues. In my Windows 7 installation, I am able to connect to the network, surf the internet, download files, and use various software (e.g., Yahoo Messenger, Skype, Kaspersky Antivirus which updates fine).

Thank you for your information.

Actually I was about to advise of a work around that worked for me, all that was necessary was to turn off the Windows Firewall.

Of course this is not a final solution as it is obviously not a good idea to turn off the firewall while downloading, also after I turn it back on I assume Automatic Updates will again be blocked. A message to the effect that Automatic Updates were being blocked was what first drew my attention to the problem.

I would suggest that someone on this forum who is in contact with the appropriate Microsoft group should pass on this information for a correction to be organised. Now that I can download Updates I should be able to install it.  :-)

    OMG thank you so much. I tried everything else to no avail but this worked for me and my pc now has 15 updates loading onto it yay :)

    Yesterday I found another solution to this error 8024402f

    I did put on two threads,and thought this thread as most used needs to be put on here now

    The results so far corrected 3/3 Windows 7 64bit computers(my own plus 2 others) 0/1Vista s

    An unbelievable simple process.

    I will paste all the information as I first did it is quite a story

    I have had this problem as well and tried alot of recommendations but none apparently worked.On the update box on my computer has  recent time update tried had NEVER.

    So if you have this maybe this will work for you I tried quite a path with all having the same apparent result with the error 8024402F Coming up.

    This is such a mad mad world we live in (murphies law seems to be in control.)

    Do exactly the opposite what is logical

    First set your update setting to NEVER RECEIVE UPDATES, then UNTICK the two boxes below if they are ticked (one about any one can update,) and the other about being informed about available updates.(That one a box comes up are you shore you want not to be notified etc.)

    NOW USING MURPHIES LAW  Leave all settings as is eg NOTHING SHOULD WORK

    NOW CLICK THE UPDATE BUTTON SURPRISE SURPRISE YOU NOW CAN UPDATE.!!!!!

    After updating ,check for further updates after the first batch.

    Then the settings can be put back to normal eg Receive updates Automatically, the tick the other two boxes.

    As you I have Windows 7 64bit.

    I had extra information if not successful ,but appears this first part works well

    Please reply if successful or not so I can update the results So far after 1 day as mention 3out3 Windows 7 64bit computers correct 0out 1 Vista.

    hi there,    tried your solution to error code 8024402f  by resetting the the time code.

    Pity it didntnt work for me.....  reaslly thought The problen had been solved...

    all i got was an error occurred during  syncronisation  ......

    Any other suggestionss.......... cheers from New Zealand    charles

    Found this helpfull & worked. After slight changes.

    Step1:3 Changed to manual, under service status, stopped then started.

    Step2:8 after this step do a restart and before trying to run an update.

    After restart run update. Then go in and change to automatic, and restart Firewall.

    Fixed problem in our two laptops. Think it was caused by installation of new combined modem/wifi, home network.
