Windows 7 Unable to install Itunes. An error occurred during the installation of assembly HRESULT:0x800736FD

**Original Title** An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT,version="8.0.50727.4053",type="win32",publicKeyToken='1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",processorarchitecture="x86". Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT:0x800736FD

Windows xp to Windows 7 32 bit install of home premium.  iTunes will not install.  The installation freezes at Publishing product information, gives this error message:

An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT,version="8.0.50727.4053",type="win32",publicKeyToken='1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",processorarchitecture="x86". Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT:0x800736FD

stays frozen and eventually claims iTunes was installed correctly.  Opening iTunes produces an error stating that Apple application support is not installed (Apple application support/Apple mobile device support are not on the computer).  (Bonjour, Quicktime, and Apple software update are there).  I have uninstalled the programs which goes fine but nothing I try can get itunes to work.  I tried installing itunes 8.0, running on a different administrator user, running as administrator, stopping all programs from running, and installing while offline.  I read that there might be a problem with Microsoft Visual C++ 2005.  My computer shows  both Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable andMicrosoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.21022.218 on it.  I tried installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update file vcredist_x86.exe found at **http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=766a6af7-ec73-40ff-b072-9112bab119c2&displaylang=en#filelist**

but it freezes at around 100% of completion. 

This is where I am now.  My Windows updates have not been failing and my system is up to date.  I do not know what to do as I need this program installed in order to use my phone.

I reinstalled Windows 7.

Good luck other people with the same problem.

    Thanks ever so much. I beat my head on this problem for about 2 hours before I tried this. I had to add the key, but it worked. I'm using Windows 10 Build 10240. For the record, iTunes is of the devil. I have a Lumia that I love, but I love my wife too, so I keep dealing with this abomination of a program.

    Thanks Arturolugo. I was hoping the solution wouldn't be that drastic. As this seems to have been a fairly common problem and going on for years ... shouldn't Microsoft have come up with a better solution?

    This support page is pretty much dead, sorry to say.

    What I ended up doing, was a full format / reinstall of Windows 7 -- not just because of the iTunes problem, the computer was a bit sloggy already so I figured I might just wipe it clean.

    Yes, it's lame, but as of today, it's the only real solution I'd actually recommend. Then clean install only the program / files you use, restore your back-up of docs, and off you go.

    It's still way better than installing Windows 8. Don't ever do that. Windows 7 is still the better choice right now.

    I have had this same problem.

    I have checked for Windows updates but it fails with the error number 80080005. When I ask for help with this, rather ridiculously it offers help with different numbers.

    I have tried installing visual C++ (didn't help)

    I have tried SFC scannow in normal and safe mode and as an administrator. Windows resource something or other won't allow it.

    I have run every troubleshooter I can find.

    I have searched every bit of microsoft I can find and there is no definitive answer which helps.

    I am in despair and feel that microsoft support has abdicated responsibility. I can see from teh "community" that this problem has been going on for 6 years. Shouldn't there have been a clear solution?
