Windows update fails with error code 0x643

I have downloaded the recent Microsoft updates and all but one installed successfully.  The failing update was:  Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297);

with an error code of  0x643.

We tried several times to install it and it keeps failing.  It was originally the 3rd update in the list to install.  After failing the first time, it was the only one we were trying to install.  We tried it after the restart required for the other updates.

    This issue can be caused by a damaged .NET Framework component. In order to resolve the issue, we have to remove previous versions of .NET Framework and reinstall .NET Framework 3.5, which contains many new features building incrementally upon .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0, and includes .NET Framework 2.0 service pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.0 service pack 1. Based on its current status, I suggest trying the following troubleshooting steps.

    Step 1: Use .Net Framework CleanUp Utility

    1. Please download the tool from the following link:

    1. Please save the zip file (dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip) from the above link to the local Desktop and extract it.
    2. Double click cleanup_tool.exe to run the tool.
    3. Please follow the instructions given.

    In the "Product to cleanup:" box, please select ".NET Framework – All versions".

    1. Click "Cleanup Now" button.
    2. Restart the computer.

    Step 2: Manually downloading and installing Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5

    Please note: The size of Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is a little big. Your patience to download the update is much appreciated.

    Thanks dave. This got me out of three very frustrating days attempting to 'repair' an XP Media Centre installation.

    I did have to re-register some of the components but the main problem was the .NET framework.

    Oh and I agree 'It should not have to be this hard ! '

    I spoke too soon that Marnix's fix worked.  It didn't.  My computer started doing all kinds of weird things including what I call "the cursor dance," freezing during AVG runs and the screen going completely fragmented, then the system rebooting over and over and over in a loop.  I did the Microsoft fix of uninstalling all the .NET files and then reinstalling in a certain order, which worked until I started downloading the updates.  Last night I got the cursor dance again.  It runs up and down the screen and neither touchpad nor mouse can control it.  So I'm still stumped.

    This is a bull sh*t answer.

    With your $30+B in cash on your balance sheet, you fix the problem so the user doesn't to go through all sorts of gyrations to install a fix to a problem you created!

    I have the exact same problem on my laptop running Vista, maybe it's a Microsoft issue that they don't want to address because I can't get an answer either!

    I'm at .net framework 3.5, so why would I need a 1.1 sp1 update?
