why is there no multi band equalizer for windows 7?
Yes I understand that you can change the settings in media player to change the equalizer, but this is useless for example when listening to online material, this is a step backwards !. I cannot find any compatible programmes that can allow me this, which has always been available on previous windows.

What kind of audio chip do you have?
The AC97 (most common) comes with a nice utility to do all this. It's only 10-band but hey ...
The utility (called Sound Effect Manager) is installed into the control panel by default.
Failing that, try Control Panel>Sound then select your speakers and click Properties>EnhancementsOne of those options is an EQ of sorts with some presets down below.

So? That means nothing. All other versions prior to now had to deal with less diversity, less advanced features and less bundled drivers to start working just after installation. How many cd's of drivers did you had to install in XP for everything just working? One for the sound card, another for the graphic card, another for the motherboard, for the bluetooth dongle, for the printer... and so on, and of course, a lot of restarting after each hw install. In W7 you just had to install the OS and everything was already working, but sure, if you're looking for some fancy stuff you should then install the drivers from the hw manufacturer, and if they don't have then complain to them, who are the responsible for that, not MS.
And btw, I'm not related to MS in any way, just in case, I just wanted to point out that you're complaining to the wrong guys.

Well, while the simple non technical reason why is that Microsoft doesn't care enough about you to install it and it is too much trouble for anyone else to provide a solution, I know that is not what you want to hear, and that is why I am beginning to hate Microsoft more and more and am leaning more towards open source software. The only answer I have found is by setting up mine to dual boot Ubuntu 10.04 while I know this is not the solution most of you want to hear it is a solution and seems to be the first offered other than "buy a mac" Believe it or not it is really easy to do (go to this link for the 32 bit folks http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download or this for the 64 bit folks http://www.ubuntu.com/GETUBUNTU/DOWNLOAD of course you need to make the appropriate changes, and from there you follow the instructions or just do a Google search for Ubuntu and read all about it) and I prefer it to 7 in every way except the new Windows Media Center which I find to be exceptional and it has no match in the open source world. Now don't get me wrong Ubuntu doesn't come fully prepped for everything you are going to use it for such as media streaming with an equalizer, but all of that is very easily done with a quick Google search. from there enjoy your new equalizer which will control all of your audio output for for streaming and everything else
P.S. I know not everyone is willing to go to this "extreme" but if you are willing to you will find a refreshing and easy to use alternative to Windows and Apple which is totally free and completely open to development by anyone. I'm not trying to bash Microsoft here but they have not provided an equalizer and on Ubuntu there is one available and since it is available for free and usable on 99% of all Microsoft equipment I simply suggest it as an alternative for this problem until Microsoft pulls their head out on this and the many other problems their software always seems to have.

Also there is a software called mp3Doctor that allows you to upload songs and equalize it to whatever you want and re-export them as equalized mp3's.
