“Display driver stopped responding and has recovered” error.

  • Running Windows 7, 32-bi,t on a Lenovo W500. Display Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650.
  • The error message (“display driver stopped responding & has recovered”) follows a system freeze, a short blackout. Then everything works fine.
  • Downloaded the most current driver from the company's Web site.
  • Seeemd to work for a day, but now I'm getting the same behavior.

Hello Crabby Office Lady,

This error can happen because of an outdated video driver, to many programs running at one time or even high CPU activity. There is a link to a KB article on the following post that gives more info on the issue and helps to fix it, see:

    Same problem here.

    I was using:

    SLI 8800 GTX

    MSI NF750-G55

    4GB G.Skill RAM

    750watt PSU

    Win 7 64-bit

    Also, a 20 inch Veiwsonic monitor /non HD

    with Ultra Aluminex Case

    Then my monitor burned out and opted to do some upgrading and bought a Cooler Master HAF 932 case, a 24inch Viewsonic HD 1080P monitor with HDMI/DVI support, and a GTX 570 HD.

    I started getting the error message a week after I installed the GTX 570 HD which was the last piece that I bought for my upgrading. I sent the card in for RMA thinking that was the issue but it was not. Also it doesn't happen with my 8800 GTX's. But when I install my new card it does???

    Also, it didn't happen until after I installed the latest Win 7 SP1? Hmm, but I also read that this has been going on for quite some time so I'm sure that is not the problem.

    I m having same problem since i upgraded window 7 ultimate, i have restore fresh OS installed all patches and latest driver but problme still exist. Any one has any clue?

    You're right. I thought this worked but I didn't. I just had the same problem happen again. I would still recommend using the "High Performance" power option because it has seemed to make me get this error less frequently.

    I have the same problem. I made clean install of Windows 7 64 bit, use the latest driver of my GeForce 9800GT, latest chipset driver, latest driver of everything... and when I play video, in 10s i got this message, and after a while, blue screen.

    Same problem with Vista 64 bit
