I updated 11 windows xp updates today from Microsoft.com and restarted my pc like it asked me to. (There has definitely been absolutely NO CHANGE in my computer software or hardware installation apart from this updates)
From then on, Windows cannot restart again! It is stopping at the blue screen with the following message:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer.
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
Technical Information:STOP: 0x00000050 (0x80097004, 0x00000001, 0x80515103, 0x00000000).
I tried all kinds of restarting option namely, safe modes etc. but everything is returning to the blue screen.
I hope Microsoft technical support has an answer as to how to resolve this problem.

If you are not experiencing the Blue Screen on reboot and you have successfully installed the KB977165 update you do not need to do anything.
The only situation in which you need uninstall the update is if you are experiencing blue screens on reboot.

We have found that there is only one patch that requires un-installation to resolve the blue screen issue. KB977165 is the patch in question, the other patches do not seem to cause the blue screen behaviour and do not need to be uninstalled.
With that in mind, here's the updated solution steps:
Once you are in the Repair Screen..
IMPORTANT: If you are able to uninstall the patch and get back into Windows, in order to stay protected you can use the following automated solution which secures your PC against the vulnerabilities that are resolved with KB977165 until you can successfully get the update installed without the blue screens.

I have not yet downloaded this update.
What can I do to ensure that I never do download KB977165?
Can I uncheck it before downloading?
Or do I need to d/l and then choose not to install it?
Or will I have to spend the rest of my life guarding against KB977165?
DISCLAIMER: KB977165 this is an important update as it fixes a XP kernel vulnerability that is actively being exploited.
You may decide not to run it by doing a manual Windows Update:
START
MICROSOFT (OR WINDOWS) UPDATE
Click the CUSTOM button and let it run
When the list of update comes up
Uncheck the check box next to "Security Update for Windows XP (KB977165)
Check the box "Don't show this again"
Review and Install the rest of the updates
DISCLAIMER: This is only a temporary work around. As stated above, this update must be run once it is fixed as not doing so will leave your computer open to a known and active exploit.

It took all my courage to FINALLY upgrade my XP Media Center desktop and my XP Pro laptop from SP2 to SP3. The desktop has had SP3 for several days, the laptop for a couple of hours, and everything looks good so far. I was just about to run this week's updates on the laptop when I ended up finding this thread. And now I don't know what to do.
This thread IS becoming very confusing, so can you just answer a couple of questions please.
#1. Have you determined for certain that in this batch of updates you released this week, the problem is occurring in and ONLY in KB977165 ? If it can be narrowed down to that, at least, people know what to avoid.
#2. Are you going to announce on this thread when it is safe to update our systems again?
I don't use auto updates because of internet speed and bandwidth issues, I update everything manually. When can I be confident that it is safe to update Windows again?
Many consumers these days are not provided with Windows CD's, myself included. Computer manufacturers are increasingly selling systems with hidden recovery partitions, and if we want 'recovery discs', we have to create them ourselves. Even then, these are not "Windows CD's", so directing someone to use their Windows CD to fix a broken OS doesn't always help.
Hopefully this problem gets fixed soon, appreciate your hard work on this. :)
